RangersAfter the events of last year the last thing Rangers need is a civil war breaking out in the boardroom. The latest upheaval in the Ibrox boardroom tells us one thing and that is that no matter what Charles Green, Craig Whyte or anyone else claims, no one has control of the reins at Ibrox.

The club finds itself once again making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The departure of Charles Green has kicked up a storm of dust that has settled on the club and in the words of manager Ally McCoist, the club needs cleansed. In- fighting is now the norm at Rangers and the fans are left once again to take sides.

The support is left with a sickening feeling of Déjà vu as Craig Whyte’s re-emergence sends tremors through the Ibrox boardroom.

In amongst all the turmoil at Ibrox the question has to be asked, are Rangers worth fighting for?  The answer is yes. Rangers mean too much to people and are too important to Scottish football to die. Nothing good comes easy. No one likes confrontation but the fall out of the Craig Whyte fraud was never going to be a quick fix. The shock waves from the assault on Rangers will run and run in the courts and the press. Rangers are one of the biggest clubs on the planet and will be making headlines for years to come both on and off the pitch.

Craig Whyte is like a ghost that haunts Rangers and it will take time for the club and the fans to exorcise his spirit from the club. The fans still fear that somehow Whyte has some hold over the club and only in the fullness of time will the truth come out. But the club and the fans must face up to the reality that it will take years for Rangers to recover from the damage done by Craig Whyte and the disastrous decision of Sir David Murray to sell the club to him for a pound.

Once again it is the support that is left asking questions and feeling left on the outside of the club they love, and there will be many dark days ahead in the struggle for the hearts and minds of the support. The speed of the departure of Charles Green and the storm it has provoked has shown that the club still feels vulnerable and the wish of the supporters for the club to focus on purely football matters is not going to happen. There are serious questions over the manager’s position, the performance and direction of the team, as well as the on-going conflict in the boardroom, and these all add up to make it a difficult period for the club.

One thing is sure – Scotland needs Rangers and the fight to restore Rangers to the top of the Scottish game and cleanse the club of those who tried to kill it is a fight worth fighting, no matter how painful and difficult it may be.
