The prodigy who could rule Manchester United’s midfield for years to come:

Manchester United’s midfield has provided Sir Alex Ferguson with a dilemma for a long-time. And though they’ve swept aside all in their path this season, I don’t think it’s a dilemma that the club is any closer to solving.

With players like Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs approaching the end of their careers (they can’t play forever – can they?) there will have to be further recruitment at some point.

Combine this with Darren Fletcher’s much discussed issues, Anderson’s flop-status and the lack of versatility displayed by Michael Carrick and there’s plenty of reason to feel that Sir Alex needs to swoop into the transfer market and snap up a bonafide midfield talent.

Who this may be is a rather large question.

TalkSPORT recently recycled some old quotes from Mario Goetze concerning Manchester United (and a couple of other clubs – but they’re not our concern!). Borussia Dortmund’s young midfield dynamo told the Press:

“Clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United are attractive, and playing in another top league would shape me and help me develop as a player. But I’m not thinking that far ahead at the moment. I’m happy in Germany and am delighted with the way things are going. Anything else is still a long way off.”

Yes, he’s in no hurry to move on from the Bundesliga, but the fact that he lists Manchester United amongst his favoured clubs is exciting. I view him as the perfect solution to United’s midfield dilemma.

Given United’s ascedency at the moment, they don’t really need to sign another experienced midfielder. A young, up and coming star may be just the ticket. They would have the opportunity to develop at Old Trafford, buy into the club’s philosophy and turn into the player Fergie wants them to be.

And as talented young players go, there are few better than Mario Gotze. He’s already won two Bundesliga titles with Dortmund (and played an integral role in both). He has remarkable levels of technical ability for a player of his age and a stunning range of passing. There’s a reason he’s been earmarked for a big future at International and club level.

Whilst this transfer deal doesn’t look like it’s even close to happening, I can’t help but hope that Gotze is a player on Fergie’s radar.
