Alex SongHere’s one of the stranger rumours of recent weeks. The Daily Mail claims that Tottenham are readying an ‘ambitious’ move for ex-Arsenal midfielder Alex Song, but will only push forward should they secure Champions League football next season. Wait, what?

Let’s deal with the second part of that statement. Tottenham are currently in a position where a top-four finish is far from guaranteed.

A fantastic comeback against Manchester City may spark a late season revival, but Spurs’ Premier League form has been below average in recent weeks. With Arsenal on the ascendency and Chelsea (just about) hanging tough, Champions League football may yet allude Tottenham for another season.

But it’s worth asking the question: is Alex Song really a player who would demand European football at the top level?

Let’s not forget, this is a footballer who was recently voted the second worst La Liga signing of the season (behind ex-Spurs midfielder, Luka Modric, of all people). At the moment, he’s finding it difficult to crack the Barcelona first team.

That’s not all that surprising. Yes, Barca have a wealth of attacking talent, but they also have Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano who can play in Alex’s Song’s position. You have to question why the Cameroonian defensive midfielder made this move in the first place.

With all this in mind, I’m sure Song is desperate for some first team action. Surely he’d jump at the opportunity to play for Spurs if it were offered?

I don’t even think that talk about crossing the North London divide is merited. Song, with his big headphones and bobbly hat, never really played for ‘the badge’. When Barca came a knocking, he walked. I’m sure he’d do the same thing were Spurs to declare their interest.

Spurs interest doesn’t seem to make much sense either. If Arsene Wenger didn’t see fit to keep him, why should Andre Villas-Boas be interested?

Besides, aren’t Tottenham pretty well stocked in that area? Scott Parker is a more than capable defensive midfielder and when Sandro’s back from injury he’ll provide another option. It seems more of a ‘luxury’ signing, rather than a necessity and I feel Tottenham should be concentrating on bolstering their attack.

And with Barca reportedly looking to sell Song for around £15m, I’d say this is one that Spurs should stay well clear of.

What’s your take? Should Tottenham swing for this ex-Arsenal talent?
