Kevin StrootmanEdwin Van Der Sar’s tenure at Old Trafford meant so much to Manchester United fans, that when he talks, they tend to listen.

The ace shot-stopper was one of the best players to ever pull on gloves at Manchester United, as well as being a smart individual with his head screwed on properly.

Suffice to say, his opinions are worthwhile.

Manchester United have been on the hunt for a world-class central midfielder for a while now. For some, the acquisition of Shinji Kagawa meant the end of this search. Yet the Japanese International doesn’t appear to have the versatility, strength or wherewithal to be United’s big hope for the future.

For this reason, I hope Sir Alex is still on the look. But who can fill this void?

Me and Van Der Sar seem to be united on this front: Dutch International, Kevin Strootman would be the perfect man for the job. The box-to-box midfielder and ace play-maker has grown frustrated with the speculation regarding his future and may be ready to move on:

“Every transfer window there are clubs interested. But a club must speak to me first.” (Source: Sky Sports).

A potential £17m move has been mooted and that would represent decent value of money.

The 23-year-old Dutchman is one of the finest young midfielders in European football and looks set to enjoy a fantastic future in the game – let’s hope it’s with Manchester United.

Here’s what Van Der Sar had to say: “I’m not into speculation. I still read the English papers so I see a lot of names. If you are not working inside the club then you never know.

But [Strootman] would be a good signing and there is a history [of Dutch players at United] like myself, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Jaap Stam, Robin [Van Persie] now, so maybe there will be another.” (Source: Sport 360)

Not one for speculation Edwin? Regardless, Van Der Sar has a fantastic taste in players and has selected one of the finest Dutch talents in the game. Strootman is ready for a move to a big club and Manchester United have a gap in the centre of the park they need to feel.

This could be a match made in heaven. Let’s hope Sir Alex Ferguson is still keeping tabs on the musings of his old goalkeeping chum.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United heed Edwin’s words and sign Kevin Strootman?
