Should Arsenal really sign this £24m talent?

Stevan JoveticArsenal have been linked to Stevan Jovetic for the best part of a year now. But with Arsene Wenger notoriously tight-fisted and unwilling to splash the cash, it has never been clear whether the Gunners would make good on their interest. After all, Jovetic, Fiorentina’s silky forward, wont come cheap. He’s the real deal.

But developments this week seem to suggest that a deal may actually happen.

First CaughtOffside, claimed that Arsenal had made a ‘massive step’ closer to securing a long-term deal for Jovetic, who they labelled the new Robin Van Persie (eurgh!).

The source was even willing to go into details about the negotiations, wages and the potential price-tag. The Montenegrin could be about to earn £100k-a-week at the Emirates, with Fiorentina ready to accept £24m in return for their player.

This is a lot of money (indeed, Arsenal would be smashing their previous transfer record), but it’s not a bad price for Jovetic, who has quickly shot to fame over the last two or so seasons. He’s one of those players who could kick-on and become something special. I’ve likened him a little to Luis Suarez and though he’s got some way to go to match his ability, Jovetic certainly doesn’t have the same amount of baggage.

And at 23-years-old, he’s still got room for further development.

To back up this rumour, Ilsussidiario.net (via Brandish) agent Peppino Tirri took to his soapbox: “I read the news this morning in the newspapers. In fact it is a deal that might have practical implications. Expect developments.”

Developments, eh? How exciting!

I’m not sure how much he may know, given how his source is the papers (rather than his own inside line), but it is somewhat interesting that he’s suggesting that it’s something more than the usual processed transfer tattle.

If Jovetic does wind up at Arsenal, then Premier League fans will have genuine reason to be excited. Despite playing mostly as a secondary-striker, Jovetic has bagged an impressive 26 goals in 53 starts. His magic feet often earn him time and space in the box and he usually has the wherewithal to find the back of the net. He’ll certainly make for good viewing on Match of the Day.

As for Arsenal, he certainly has to be a step up on the likes of Nicklas Bendtner, Marouane Chamakh and Park Chu-Young.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal really seal the deal on this £24m youngster?
