Are Liverpool right to target this Napoli ace?

Gokhan InlerMuch of the column inches regarding Liverpool’s big game on Sunday, have been taking up by the now infamous Luis Suarez biting incident.

By now, just about everybody has had their say about Suarez. But wherever you stand, you have to admit the Uruguayan’s gnashers succeeded only in taking a mighty big chomp out of the day’s true story: the Reds fighting back to earn a 2-2 draw against a strong Chelsea side.

Suarez didn’t deserve to be on the pitch to score the equaliser (in the 96th minute), but the fact that Liverpool had the fight and desire to make it happen so late into the game is quite something.

Brendan Rodgers has spoke a lot about the club’s ‘character’ and ‘spirit’ this season. This was one of the few occasions this year where we’ve actually seen these claims substantiated.

It’s also a brief glimpse at what the future could hold if Brendan makes the right additions during the summer transfer window. Days like Sunday could become a regular occurrence once more (let’s just hope that the biting isn’t part of it).

With that in mind, I was excited to see that the Reds had recently been linked to a Serie A talent, currently earning his pay at Napoli.

Unfortunately, I’m not referring to Edinson Cavani, Napoli’s most sought after star. But Gokhan Inler, the man in question, should still be good enough to tempt most Liverpool fans. (Source: Forza Italia)

Inler made is name at Udinese, back in 2010-11, when his good form helped the club secure a Champions League play-off spot. His contributions were enough to tempt Napoli to make a 12m euro move for the central-midfielder.

He has since made 84 appearances for Napoli, impressing with his speed of thought, precise passing and physical presence. I consider him to be an excellent all rounder, whose experience and drive would be an asset to most teams.

I think he’d fit in well at Liverpool in particular. The Reds need a bit more brute force in the centre of the park, but they also need somebody who can spray the ball about nicely (as Joe Allen seems to have lost this ability and Steven Gerrard now favours the Hollywood pass).

He may not be the most exciting addition that Liverpool could make, but he may well be a useful one.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool be in the market for Gokhan Inler?
