Talks of Brazilian Dede (source: The Mirror) have also emerged as of late and will certainly make a great addition due to the fact Rodgers doesn’t fancy Skrtel or Coates to fill the central defence slot alongside Agger. Martin Kelly would make a great centre back due to his commanding presence and vocal approach to the game and would certainly save on funds. Whether Rodgers can see him playing there in the future is another matter entirely.
Another position of pertinence is the left-back spot. I feel perhaps cover for Jose Enrique or competition would be great as there is no decent back up. Whenever he is out injured, Glen Johnson is switched to the opposite flank, whereby he does a fantastic job, nonetheless playing out of his favoured right-back role. There are slim-pickings for the role but I feel Aly Cissokho (source: The Express) meets the criteria of the quintessential modern day full-back. He has Champions League experience, is strong, has great pace and technically is very good on the ball.
I also feel we need a thorough-bred holding midfielder, one with pace and strength and who reads the game through anticipation. As much improved Lucas Leiva is, he still commits far too many fouls for my liking. There are talks of bringing Xabi Alonso back to the club but this may just be conjecture with reports of his agent leaking out hogwash in order to garner a handsome contract (Source: NBC Sports).
Another quality winger wouldn’t go amiss as I don’t think Stewart Downing makes the grade. He’s a decent squad player but in the big games he goes missing and lacks the bite of a quality winger that can wreak havoc damage on opposition defences. Rumours flying about have stated Hatem Ben Arfa may be on Brendan Rodgers wish list and a possible cash plus player swap could be incentivised with Andy Carroll making the switch back to former club (Source: The Mirror). I think it would be great business because of the abundant skill and quality on the ball he has.
Bringing in these players will mean some will have to leave inevitably. Sebastian Coates looks likely to be leaving in the summer. Martin Skrtel also looks out of place in the current set with the amount of mistakes he has made this year; it seems Rodgers appears to be casting his gaze elsewhere. With Jamie Carragher retiring, Andre Wisdom could do with some more experience as could Jonjo Shelvey and so possible loan deals for them would be great. Andy Carroll also looks to be departing cometh the summer and if wingers do come in Stewart Downing may also leave unless he is content with a squad role.
I think if all these targets are met, with a few players being sold or loaned out, we’ll have a fighting chance of making an impact on the top four next year, winning a domestic cup and having a good run in Europe, pending we qualify.
