Don’t blame Saint Mirren & Ross Country: the SPL was doomed long before

SPL chiefPlans to introduce a new 12-12-18 set up into Scottish football under one league structure were shot down in flames when Saint Mirren chairman Stewart Gilmour and Ross County chairman Roy MacGregor both voted no.

Both chairmen appear to have listened to their supporter’s views on league reconstruction and now appear to be in the firing line, with Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne and Hearts chief executive David Southern lashing out at both men. Gilmour especially seems to be taking the full force of the spurned SPL.

These attacks are only the latest desperate attempts of chairmen who are in denial that their decision to kick Rangers out of the SPL has backfired spectacularly. The decision to deny the Ibrox club entry into the SPL after administration has been a financial disaster for the top flight in Scotland.

The spite that has been directed especially towards Gilmour is particularly twisted, coming from chairmen who couldn’t wait to kick Rangers out of the SPL, yet now need to have them back under the one league structure. The SPL lost control of Rangers the minute they went to the SFL third division and have now failed in trying to reverse the lunacy of that decision.

Saint Mirren and Ross County are now being used as scapegoats for the actions of those who when faced with the Rangers crisis could not see beyond the end of their bigoted noses.

What we are seeing from the SPL is that they want a league of yes men in tow to certain influential people and when they don’t get their own way they throw a temper tantrum. They are furious that some clubs have not gone along with their agenda and the toys are now being flung out the pram.

Stewart Milne should perhaps concentrate more on his own club. A club that has not won a trophy of any type under his chairmanship and season after season end up at the wrong end of the table. The club has recently announced that it will close half of the Dick Donald Stand and use it as a banner area as they can no longer afford to keep it open. It seems the Aberdeen public no longer find their local football club an attractive option on a Saturday afternoon. The club has also shelved plans to move to a new purpose built ground.

The real problem with Scottish Football is at the top. The men who run the game, Stewart Regan and Neil Doncaster should resign now. Until they do the game will continue to be fractured and the paying public will continue to turn its back on a product that sees more action off the park than on it.
