Can Brendan Rodgers stop the decline of Kenny Dalglish’s rotten Liverpool?

Iconic MomentsIn May 2011, Liverpool messiah Kenny Dalglish took over as manager of the merseyside club on a full-time basis. Dalglish had been working as interim manger since January, taking over from Roy Hodgson when he departed the Anfield side.

After the departure of Torres on the January transfer deadline day, Dalglish was given a hefty budget for replacements, which he used to purchase Luis Suarez from Ajax for £22.5 million and Andy Carroll from Newcastle for £35 million in the January transfer window. Dalglish guided the club to a sixth place finish in the Premier League, during his first six months back in the Liverpool hot seat.

Dalglish’s acquisition of the Uruguayan striker was probably one of the only good decisions he made during his second spell at the helm of the club. The signing of Andy Carroll, was bizarre enough, but the transfer fee he commanded was entirely laughable. Dalglish sanctioned the eighth largest transfer of all time, for a player who had scored 30 goals for Newcastle in 81 appearances, most of which came in the championship.

Dalglish’s orders to sign Carroll at any cost, show a manager who was desperate and very much out of ideas after securing the services of Suarez. The signing of Suarez was undoubtedly a major success. He has shone with his performances on the pitch and has proven to be a great signing. However, the purchase of Carroll was extremely poorly judged, and it paints an image in ones mind of Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and Director Derek Lambias sitting in the board room writhing with uncontrollable laughter uttering ‘I cant believe Liverpool fell for it’.

King Kenny’s second stint at the merseyside club was not only rife with inconsistent performances in the Premier League. The controversy surrounding Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra, was handled very unprofessionally by Dalglish, which has no doubt had a detrimental effect on Liverpool’s public image. Dalglish’s role at the Anfield side, before he was appointed manager, should also be examined. Dalglish, brought in by Benitez in 2009, to take charge of the youth system, seems to have exerted too much influence on both the Liverpool fans and board alike, playing an important part in finding a sucessor to Benitez, in Roy Hodgson, and then ultimately influencing the decision to relieve Hodgson of his duties. The presence of Dalglish above Hodgson at the club was always going to make Hodgson’s position a difficult one, and perhaps the Liverpool fans were more keen to see Hodgson sacked in order for Dalglish to return, rather than as a result of his work in his relatively small time at the club.

Dalglish’s summer signings in the summer of 2011, were questionable, spending 36 million in total on Henderson and Downing. The combination of spending on Carroll, Henderson and Downing totalled 71 million, which most people have seen as a severe over estimation of their worth and ability. For that amount of money, Dalglish could have purchased Spanish stars Michu and Cazorla and the Belgian Eden Hazard, who’s recent summer moves came to 50.5 million, which is 20.5 million less than what was paid for the English trio.

This sort of wild spending from Dalglish has caused the Liverpool board to be more guarded about the clubs expenditure. Despite Dalglish leading Liverpool to two good cup runs, winning the League cup in February 2012, his premier league leadership was below what is acceptable for a Liverpool manager. Liverpool finished the season in eighth, their worst showing in the league since 1994, failing to qualify for Europe’s Champions League for a third straight season. This led to the Liverpool board sacking Dalglish on May 16th, and appointing Swansea manager Brendan Rogers (below) on a four year deal.

this article is a tissue of lies and has no foundation in truth.
The author has an obvious agenda and should be sacked from his position

  • chuck says:

    You got that right !

  • Sargonid says:

Bollocks, obviously you have contradicted yourself only to serve your hideous purpose of having a go at dalglish. the way you wrote this piece of shite is laughable

    • DaveWestAus says:

Dalglish has NEVER been a good manager ; fans who think he was good are deluding themselves ! FACT !

      • Terry Smith says:

you obviously have not got a clue. LFC under dalglish put on the greatest performance ever. FACT not my words but Sir Tom Finney

      • Sargonid says:

and you are NOT a lfc fan. FACT!!

    • j75j says:

Bit surprised by this website which is usually pretty good! Must be looking for for hits so what better then an attack on LFC and KK which has been written hundreds of times since Kenny left! All a bit boring now!!!!!!!! But how about mentioning Rodgers poor summer signings? We are scoring more goals under Rodgers but are conceding more goals then under Kenny! 40 goals last season 3rd best in the league but already 40 goals under Rodgers this season! If your going to use stats to back up your argument don’t be biased!!!!!!!!!

  • Bill says:

Utter crap. written by a cretin.

  • roo says:

Bang on Dalglish was one hell of a player as good as Suarez, but by the time of his second go at managing Liverpool he was out of touch with the modern game which showed not only in his transfer fees but also the type of player he wanted top teams show that U do not need a massive unit playing as a number 9 because they are just mobile enough Rodgers understands the need for possesion and keeping the ball on the floor as much as possible Kenny still a legend though! YNWW 96

  • red33 says:

The FSG did the right thing even though i’m a fan of kk and one thing that i find is daglish is no tactician nor any idea how to turn game around , poor on buying the right players and most of all spending money like water. How could he.. 35 mil for AaaAAAa donkey? skill of Charlie Adam,Jordan Henderson and Steward Downing,it’s my worst year watching liverpool play like a championship material,it break my heart. Now under BR i ‘m still hoping hendo n downing will b sell even they made lots of progress i doubt they will take liverpool to higher level,we need speedy n technically winger,a creative n attack minded mid,and i don’t see that on both of them and that is part of the reason we’re playin so inconsistent, just how many times our midfield has been over run by other teams? Lets hope 2013/14 will have better season on performance n players.ynwa

    • Terry Smith says:

all crap players like Suarez, Aldridge, Barnes. Beardsley etc etc etc
      Another clueless critic of KD

  • Sargonid says:

BR is no tactician either. same team same tactic regardless of whether we are playing arsenal or stoke. in the meantime, we are giving away more goals with the same back four we had last year. BR is lucky to have both gerrard and suarez fit for every game and lucas back from injury, unlike last year when kenny didnt have the same luxury.

    • Terry Smith says:

difference between BR an KD is the goals by Suarez.
similar performance last season by Suarez under KD would have seen LFC challenging for title
      FACT

  • sbaphiwe says:

lol its looks lyk there some fans who dont beleav on BR bt they wil c who he is, come nxt season

  • Linden says:

All of the comments on this page amazes me. I cant see how any of you deluded people can sympathize with Dalglish and his old fashioned tactics of playing unattractive, long-ball football. Liverpool went on to finish 8th last season their lowest finish in premier league history and apart from Suarez undoubtedly one of the greatest strikers in the world at present KDs signings were some what abysmal and the price tags that come with these players makes you feel for the man. He was tactically inept and could not grasp the pace of the premier league game and therefore i completely agree with William Robey and would like to commend him for this fantastic, FACTUAL article.

    • j75j says:

factual? Where it suits his argument! You could have read this stuff for the last year! It’s nothing new!!!!!!!!!!!

    • j75j says:

Also Allen, Sahin, Borini and Assaidi have all failed getting to grips with how Rodgers wants to play and he had to return to Downing, Henderson and Enrique who have all excelled under Rodgers so it makes peoples arguments against KK signings look daft when Rodgers is making the most out of these players where is own summer signings have been rotten!!!!!!!!!

      • Linden says:

Borini has been injured most of the season and when we’ve seen Assaidi he looks promising however for some reason Rodgers has decided to persist with playing downing although he has hit form recently and hasn’t given Assaidi the chance to flourish. Ok, Sahin didn’t work out but i’d rather take him than Charlie Adam and it proves my point because Adam is at Stoke now and Sahin is at Dortmund. Allen has also fitted in well with Liverpool, however he doesn’t have a flair in the midfield that all Liverpool fans expect to have but what they don’t see is that he fits in well with Rodgers’ style and holds the midfield together well with his passing ability. Not to mention Sturridge he’s been a real flop!!!

        • j75j says:

Summer signings! Summer signings that the writer forgot to mention in his factual write up!!!!

        • Sargonid says:

Allen fit in well? he is not good enough to wear the shirt. nearly choked when BR said he is our xavi. where is our iniesta?

  • An Arsenal Fan says:

Don’t dislike Rodgers, or the job he is trying to do: but I do think two or three more things need consideration. Firstly, how much was Dalglish’s sacking based on the actual performance of the club? Secondly, one is forced to ask the question that had Rodgers’ team had to go 8 games without Luis Suarez would they even be in the top half? For me, the answer to that is no. Thirdly, whilst a 4 year plan is acceptable and JWH would be wise to let him see it through; the development of the clubs around Liverpool – Spurs, Everton, Arsenal, Swansea and others who will surely emerge as European hopefuls will surely not stop over the next 4 years. Developing Liverpool to the current level of Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal is all well and good, except in 4 years time i fully expect them to have done a little bit of improvement themselves: he has a far greater task than just catching up with them, he has to actually make ground on them fast whilst they’re still racing ahead. Good luck to him, although I can’t see them breaking the top 4 for a while now, however well this ‘project’ works.

  • Steve Turner says:

What is wrong with some people in this world! This article is one thing and one thing only : Bang On! What amazes me is how some people can be so narrow minded! Fantastic article

    • j75j says:

Bang on? Lol! The writer has written a piece to back up his own argument but is about as balanced as a Humpty Dumpty! The writer is narrow mined else he wouldn’t be so biased in his write up which you agree with so makes you narrow minded as well!

  • Sargonid says:

Do you watch the games, really? this artcle is nothing but BIAS. you clueless lot never cease to amaze me

  • Er says:

Ate you employed by fsg, you cynical little twit?
