Why this man is the freebie Liverpool can’t afford to miss:

|

Manuel IturraAre Liverpool back on track? It’s probably too soon to tell, but three Premier League wins on the trot, including an impressive victory over an energetic Tottenham side, is a good omen. Brendan Rodger’s boys are now above Everton in the Premier League table and they’ll be looking up to see if they can’t catch Arsenal and Chelsea (and, indeed, Tottenham).

Despite these steps forward (including an excellent, rejuvenating January transfer window) Rodgers must know that Liverpool’s season wont be considered a success unless he earns Champions League football.

Yes, Liverpool fans would have wanted more than this at the start of the season, but given the way things have gone, I’d say this would be acceptable now.

A top four finish will also have a bearing on the kind of players Liverpool will be able to target in the next transfer window.

This brings me to TalkSPORT‘s claim that Liverpool are looking to agree a deal to sign Malaga’s exciting playmaker, Manuel Iturra. Along with Isco, Iturra has been building a real name for himself this year, impressing in both La Liga and the Champions League.

He’s a versatile midfielder, who can twist and turn past other players, work space for himself and fire off quick passes into the feet of attackers. He’s dangerous both because of the range of his passing and the speed he’s capable of delivering the ball.

The good news for Liverpool is that his Malaga contract will run out at the end of the season, making him a free agent. Given the La Liga side’s financial troubles, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to offer the kind of cash that Iturra is looking for and he’ll probably end up at another club this summer.

The bad news for Liverpool? He’s now accustomed to the Champions League and doesn’t look out of place playing in it. Will Brendan Rodgers be able to tempt him away from La Liga if he can’t offer the player a platform on the biggest stage in the game?

This remains to be seen, though there’s every chance that money could talk in this situation. Liverpool may not have a truckload of cash to spend, but given that they’ll avoid having to pay a transfer fee, they’ll be able to afford to stump up a decent wage. And that could be exactly what it takes to tempt him.

And if you add Iturra and a couple of other world-class talents to this squad, who knows what will happen this season?

What’s your take? Would you like to see Liverpool pursuing Manuel Iturra?
