Why this Arsenal double transfer swoop could rejuvenate the club:

|

Michel VormHaving just beaten Swansea City in their own backyard, it looks like Arsene Wenger is ready to go a step better and start gutting their backline.

The Gunners were extremely impressive at the Liberty Stadium, soaking up all the pressure and then turning it back on the Swans at the right moments.

It’s Arsenal’s second 2-0 victory in a row and that both clean sheets came away from home, is extremely promising.

Without the error-prone Thomas Vermaelen leading the back-line and the boyish exuberance of Wojciech Szczesny causing problems, Arsenal look a different side. The Arsenal of the last two games have been well organised, committed and effective.

This is in stark contrast to the Arsenal we’ve seen on other occasions this season. For me, this just goes to show: Arsenal don’t have enough strength in depth.

If Arsene doesn’t feel he can trust Vermaelen and Szczesny any longer, then surely it’s time to take to the transfer market to find replacements (or competition, should Wenger keep the faith).

This brings me to the Sunday People‘s claim that Wenger has ‘earmarked’ a move for Swansea City pairing, Michel Vorm and Ashley Williams. These would be two quality additions to the Arsenal squad.

Michel Vorm proved his class this season and even if he’s not been as impressive this term, it’s clear that he’s still a quality keeper. My feeling is that Arsenal don’t need a world-class keeper (they should save their cash for a top striker), they need a safe pair of hands and somebody to keep Szczesny on his toes.

Michel Vorm would certainly do this job.

Ashley Williams, on the other hand, is a top quality talent. The Welsh International is believed to have a £10m price-tag and is certainly worthy of this valuation. As Swansea captain, he’s vocal, committed and powerful.

He has a knack of getting his body in the way of oncoming attacks and always seems to be in the right place at the right time. This is no coincidence. He seems to have a natural instinct for this defending lark.

Yes, he’s committed to the Swans’ cause, but I wonder if he could be tempted by the promise of Champions League football (should Arsenal be able to offer this to him this summer).

Either way, Arsenal have the money to make both deals happen. Two good signings, without breaking the bank. That would be a good start to Arsenal’s summer spending.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Michel Vorm and Ashley Williams at the Emirates?

I think that will be a great addition to the current arsenal squad.

Central defense is massive problem for guns. Not however form of V or K but resident sloth Mertesacker .Whoever partners him has to concentrate on covering because of his lack of anticipation and woeful lack of pace. First Koscielny’s form suffered then Vermaillon had to alter his natural game. Per is destroying our team.Sagna too has curbed his forays forward because he doesnt trust the cover behind.Per never wins the ball in the air and physically is unable to close and dominate space. If you think I am wrong look back to spuds two goals. Now it seems it is Per and one other.Reason the other two struggled together was the changes they both had to make had become so extreme.Giroud actually wins more headers in our penalty area. Surely that cannot be right!
