Claudio MarchisioTo say that someone or something is ‘obsessed’ with something else, is a fairly extreme claim. It implies that they are preoccupied with the object to a distracting, troubling extent.

Yet according to TuttoSport (via CaughtOffside) Manchester United have an ever growing obsession with Juventus’ well-regarded midfielder, Claudio Marchisio. I’m sure Sir Alex Ferguson spends his every waking hour tracking the Italian’s every move, plotting his summer swoop and drawing love hearts round his face in the latest Juve team photo.

Sir Alex is likely slightly more distracted by the Premier League run-in and tightening his grip at the top of the Premier League table. His squad has taken on all comers this season and has largely crushed all the competition.

Whatever Fergie’s priorities may be, if there was ever a player to be the subject of ‘obsession’, it may well be Claudio Marchisio.

Whilst the 27-year-old has been a one-club man, his versatile approach and continued success at the top of the game is sure to attract big clubs like Manchester United. Though he has remained true to Juventus, being approached by Sir Alex may test his loyalty.

Of particular interest to Manchester United will be Marchisio’s cool, calm, controlled nature in front of goal. The Italian is a classy, goal-scoring midfielder. Last year he found the back of the net 11 times and this year he’s already nabbed 7.

But there’s more to his game than goals. He has fantastic technical ability, is capable of buying time and space for himself and can spray the ball about with ease and accuracy. He wouldn’t look out of place playing alongside pass-masters like Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick.

Beyond Shinji Kagawa, Manchester United don’t have enough goal-threat in the centre of the park. Marchisio would provide more balance, more threat and more competition. For that reason, he’d be an excellent addition at Old Trafford.

The player himself has won all there is to win with Juventus and may now fancy a new challenge. Joining Manchester United may be the most sensible move he can make at this stage in his career.

And should he make this move, I’m sure very few United fans will be complaining. It’s a move that’s sure to help provide further success for an extremely successful club.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United look to sign Claudio Marchisio this summer?

Of course he’ll be a good addition. Anyone from a decent European team will be surely better than Cleverley, Anderson and Co. Utd’s current midfield is simply pathetic and is well documented. What is not clear why SAF the old man fails to see this and why he bought duds like Young et el…Last season it was a big fat zero, hopefully the title will be won this term around although the customary signs of wobble appeared since Real Madrid game…Hope Utd’s management will wake up in the summer and do something about it. And what about JM??? Are Utd going to lose out on him, again????
