Kevin StrootmanThough not quite yet a household name, the creativity and ingenuity of Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman has won him plenty of fans.

Whilst his first name may lack the cultured air of his second, his playing style is cultured enough to redeem him. Old Kev is amongst the best midfielders in Europe and is probably due a move to a big club.

Which brings me to Manchester United’s interest. I’m pretty sure that a move to Old Trafford would grant him household name status.

The Express claim that Manchester United are looking to make a summer move for Strootman, but will have to fight off interest from Arsenal. Though you’d think that the Dutchman’s £17m price-tag would be enough to send Arsene Wenger running off in the other direction.

Whilst he may be the lynchpin of a fairly impressive PSV side, he certainly hasn’t ruled out a move to another club. He recently told the Press: “Every transfer window there are clubs interested. But a club must speak to me first.”

He sounds like a player who is frustrated with always getting linked to clubs but never making a move. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

You get the feeling that this situation may change in the summer.

Manchester United will need to re-assess their midfield. With players like Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs getting on in years, there’s a clear need for improvement in this area.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Sir Alex Ferguson was already weighing up his options. Furthermore, I wouldn’t be surprised if Kevin Strootman made his shortlist.

Whilst I don’t suggest that Strootman could act as a direct replacement for the Ginger Prince, he would help soften the blow when Scholes moves on.

He plays as a deep-lying midfielder, spraying the ball about with a Scholes-esque ease. He certainly doesn’t have the same competitive edge, but at 23-years-old, he may well develop additional facets to his game.

£17m is a lot of money for a youngster, but he’s a player who already justifies his price-tag. What’s more this investment is likely to be justified over the course of a couple of seasons. His re-sell value could be astronomical and the on-the-pitch value he will offer Manchester United could well be magnificent.

So here’s hoping that Fergie fights of Arsene Wenger and secures the deal his club needs to maintain their forward march.

What’s your take? Would Kevin Strootman fit in well in the Premier League?
