Kevin StrootmanArsenal’s midfield is arguably the strongest section of their squad. Whilst their defence has let them down on numerous occasions this season, and their forward line has exhibited all the penetration of a wet noodle against a stone wall, their midfield boasts a wealth of talent.

No club in world football would turn their nose up at the likes of Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Mikel Arteta. In terms of technical ability, there are very few midfields in world football that can match Arsenal. Whilst the midfield lacks in balance, there’s no doubting its prowess.

But this article is not designed to smother Arsenal’s midfield in praise. After all, if you look a little closer and peel away the first team status, you’ll discover something rather alarming underneath. The Gunner’s back up midfield options are extremely limited.

I’m talking about Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky and Abou Diaby. This claim won’t be popular with everybody, but Arsenal would be a much stronger club if these three players were replaced with individuals who could consistency challenge for a first team slot.

At the moment, Aaron Ramsey’s performance level veers from ‘poor’ to ‘good’ and usually lands on ‘average’. I’ve lost faith that he’s the next big thing, or that he’ll ever be a genuine match winner or match his potential.

Tomas Rosicky is getting on in years and has had his share of injuries. What’s more, Arsene Wenger has been reluctant to call upon him this year. His time at Arsenal must surely be running out.

Finally, there’s Abou Diaby a man who puts in a class performance one game and a turgid one the next. He’s wildly inconsistent, largely as a result of his injury problems and Arsenal can’t afford to wait for him to come good. The club have done well by him, but now it’s time to cut ties.

Selling these players would free up funds to sign one or two top midfielders who could have a major impact at the Emirates. I’d personally love to see Wenger swoop for PSV’s Kevin Strootman.

The Sun claim that Arsenal’s chief scout, Steve Rowley has been to watch him play. With a £17m price-tag he certainly wouldn’t come cheap. But he’d be a worthy investment and a major step-up on the three aforementioned individuals.

What’s your take? Is it time to wave goodbye to this Arsenal trio and welcome Kevin Strootman into the fold?

Totally agree . Need more players throughout squad and clear out fringe players that don’t make any impression on first team . Need couple of central defenders , defensive midfielders and 2 more strikers .

  • dave says:

yes can sell abou diaby. Rosicky and Ramsey are ok. bring Wanyama of Celtic defensive you will be ok. we need world class striker in play of Giroud.

  • Sir Vick says:

Take out nobodi, bt rada bring in som gud players 4us. We hav more matches 2play remember, we play 3 or more in 2weeks.

diaby’s wage is an issue considering the amount of pitch time he has, but clearly is a class player when fit and a player who has the abiity to dominate a game. Ramsey is 21! When played deeper he has been exceptional, six interceptions against reading and a massive defensive display against Bayern!! and Rosicky was paramount in the second half of last season and is a fighter who adds experience.
Arshavin, Squilacci and Djourou will all be off the books this summer so there should a bunch more wage room anyways.
Strootman is a DM.. none of the trio mentioned play DM.
Finally.. I do agree strootman would be a brilliant addition. A physical, technical DM should definitely be transfer priority number 1, but all three above players mentioned should be held onto.
