The £51.5m deadly duo who could secure Manchester United’s future:

|

CALCIO:COPPA ITALIA;ROMA-FIORENTINASir Alex Ferguson has never exactly been a manager who is willing to rest on his laurels. Whether things are good or bad, he’s always been willing to spend in the transfer market and to spend big.

So whilst Manchester United are running away with the League this season and look more or less unstoppable, I doubt this will stop him scouring the transfer market for some more additions to his squad.

And if we’re to believe the rumours that have been doing the rounds recently, Sir Alex isn’t looking to bring someone in on the cheap either. He’s looking to build on his successes this season and create a squad that can be fully competitive throughout Europe.

The Express claim that Manchester United have entered the battle for Roma’s dynamic duo, Erik Lamela and Marquinhos. Both these players are thought to have piqued Barcelona’s interest, so United are in some pretty good company here.

These two Roma stars have started to create a massive reputation for themselves throughout Europe and may fancy a move to a top club like Manchester United (not that Roma is a bad place to ply your trade!)

Erik Lamela is a particularly exciting talent, known for his startling pace and his direct running. He oozes confidence on the ball and has already nabbed 11 goals in 20 games this season. At just 20 years old, it’s easy to see what all the fuss is about.

Then there’s Marquinhos, Roma’s top centre-back. At 18-years-old, he’s another player who is mature beyond his age and has already drawn comparisons to Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane. He’s quick along the ground but he’s also strong and smart – qualities that come together to great a remarkably effective player. There’s no telling just how good he’ll end up being.

The fact that Sir Alex is tailing these players, show’s that he’s planning for the future. This is an intelligent move, but he won’t pull it off without splashing the cash.

Barca have already had a £21.5m bid turned down for Marquinhos and a £30m bid for Lamela. So yes, they won’t come cheap, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’d significantly improve this United side and provide a platform to build upon for many years to come.

Indeed, if Sir Alex can pull this move off, United’s future at the top of the game may be more or less secured.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United look to wrap up a deal for Erik Lamela and Marquinhos?
