Worst headline of the year award goes to The Metro, who gleefully claim: “Modric ‘Luking for Prem return with Manchester United”. Goodness, where to start with that? (Ed note: looks like they’ve changed the title to something more conventional, though it still appears as it was on NewsNow).
Instead of berating a bad pun, let’s look at what this article claims. It suggests that Manchester United are putting together a ‘rescue package’ for ex-Tottenham star, current Real Madrid whipping boy, Luka Modric. But would Modric be a good fit for Sir Alex’s side, or has his time in the Premier League come and gone?
Tottenham clung on to their dynamic midfielder, fighting off advances from big clubs, but it was all for naught. The Croatian had had his head turned by the mighty Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho’s side had the cash to make the deal happen.
Real splashed £33m on the 27-year-old and it was assumed he’d end up being an important part of the set-up at the Bernabeu. Unfortunately, this just hadn’t been the case.
He’s only scored twice in a Madrid shirt (though admittedly, he’s better suited at making goals, than scoring them) isn’t a regular starter and has even been voted the worst La Liga signing of the season.
Still, despite the pundits chipping away at him, it’s clear that his talent hasn’t suddenly completely evaporated. Just ask all the Manchester United fans who witnessed his spectacular goal in their Champions League clash last week.
So, what would these same fans make of the claim that: ‘Modric told friends he would be keen to cut short his stay in Spain and seal a move to the Premier League with United’?
My feeling is that Modric is better suited to the Premier League, where his quick, precise passing makes him stand out from the crowd (unlike in La Liga, where he’s just one of many players with technical ability). He may be the long-term replacement for Paul Scholes that United have been looking for.
You get the feeling that it’s only a matter of time before Modric gets La Liga fans back on his side. With this in mind, Sir Alex Ferguson should strike soon and seal a deal before Real Madrid discover his true worth.
They paid £33m for him last summer. If Sir Alex can negotiate Real down, Modric would be an excellent United signing.
