Is the time right for Tottenham to cash in on their £70m main man?

|

Tottenham's Gareth Bale will face Real Madrid in the quarter finals of the Champion's LeagueFor years we’ve known that Gareth Bale is a real, one-in-a-million kind of player. We knew that he was set for big things and would have an illustrious career. But this season he’s really kicked on and has started to perform above and beyond expectations.

He’s turned from a star into a superstar and is now surely one of the foremost attacking talents in world football. His athleticism, grace on the ball and direct running makes him a constant threat, even 90 minutes into a tough game (just ask West Ham).

But it’s his confidence and willingness to take people on, combined with his sheer quality that sets him apart from other Premier League stars.

He’s saving Tottenham’s hide on a weekly basis now, is the fulcrum of their attack, their danger man and is more or less single handedly ensuring that Spurs will have a top four finish this season.

This is great news for Spurs fans, but it also comes with two negative consequences. The first is that tiresome accusation of being ‘a one man team’, which, I mean, who really cares about? And the second, is the fact that Bale is attracting a lot of unwanted attention from European football’s brightest and best.

Andre Villas-Boas will be keen to keep hold of his main man, but with clubs like Real Madrid circling, he may struggle to do so. According to The Express, Madrid believe they have the cash necessary to tempt Spurs to sell and are willing to start the bidding at £70m – a truly astounding sum.

Real president Ramon Calderon recently insisted his side could afford Bale: “There is always a limit but Real Madrid is in a very healthy situation, economically speaking, so we would be in the position to sign him. I’m sure it will be a high amount of money because he is a fantastic player. A lot of clubs would like to have him.”

This can’t help but make me wonder – if Real are willing to pay this kind of money, is the time right for Tottenham to sell?

Imagine what AVB could do with £70m to spend. He could buy 3-4 different world-class players and absolutely revolutionise this Spurs side. He’d be able to transform Tottenham from a one-man team into a well-oiled machine, potentially one capable of challenging for the Premier League title.

And for that, I’d say losing Bale would be worth the price.

What’s your take? Should Tottenham consider ‘cashing in’ on Gareth Bale?
