One of the most arduous transfer stories of the last couple of windows has been that of Robert Lewandowski and his rumoured move to Manchester United.
It’s a deal that seems to have been finalised so often, that it’s little wonder that Robert turns up to play for Borussia Dortmund every week. That’s the nature of the Press – one week it’s on and the next week it’s off.
But despite what they’d have you think, there seems to have been little to no progress on this front. Indeed, I find it difficult to believe that Sir Alex Ferguson is all that concerned about additions to his forward line.
After all, Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck represent what is arguably the best attacking line-up in world football. With so much going on on and off the pitch, it’s difficult to imagine Sir Alex exerting so much effort trying to recruit a player he probably doesn’t need.
If we were told that he’s been chasing a world-class midfielder for the best part of a year (as he was with Wesley Sneijder, prior to his move to Galatasaray) I’d find that easier to believe.
Regardless of this, I’m sure the Polish forward would fit in nicely in this Manchester United squad, provid more competition and help keep the likes of Rooney and RVP on their toes. Dortmund’s CEO Hans Joachim Watzke recently told the Press:
“In the summer we will invest considerably, in terms of the strength as well as the depth [of the squad]. We will have money to spend and a lot will happen”. (Source: InsideFutbol).
You would think that this money will also be used to tie down important players who may have had their head turned in recent times. Lewandowski, who has scored 23 times in 32 appearances this season, may well be one of those players.
But Manchester United may well hold the edge in any potential transfer showdown with Dortmund. They can offer a club with a wealth of history, who compete for the title each and every season and rarely go a year without silverware. This must surely be something that would tempt Lewandowski. What’s more, United have enough money to make a deal happen.
On the surface of things, this doesn’t look like a necessary deal for United. Given what the player can offer the Red Devils, however, it wouldn’t be an entirely disagreeable one.
