The most surprising transfer that Arsenal could make?

|

modricHere’s a turn up for the books. Arsenal have been linked to former Tottenham star Luka Modric – just six months after the Croatian made a big money move to Real Madrid. (Source: CalcioMercato). The same source also claims that a deal could happen this summer. That’s lucky, as Arsenal weren’t exactly ‘active’ in the January transfer window.

This is a player that Spurs spend the best part of two seasons desperately trying to keep hold of. It took declerations and ultimatums on the part of Daniel Levy and Harry Redknapp to keep him at White Hart Lane. When he left it was assumed he would go on to bigger and better things.

Apparently, this hasn’t been the case. We always knew that he’d have to fight to succeed at Real Madrid, it was just assumed he had the chutzpah to make it. Unfortunately for him, he’s very much played second fiddle to German midfield maestro Mesut Ozil, whose creativity seems to has a rather large shadow over Modric.

As a result, Modric has spent a fair amount of time warming the bench at the Bernabeu this season and there’s even talk of him being the worst signing of summer 2012, which perhaps isn’t surprising given his extortionate price-tag and lack of impact.

When most players move Leagues, they are given a 6 month amnesty from fans, who understand that it takes time to adapt to new surroundings and a new style of play. But Real Madrid is a particularly unforgiving club and most fans will have been expecting Modric to make an instant impact.

Suffice to say, I’m not surprised that there’s already talk of him leaving the Bernabeu. I am surprised, however, that he has been linked to Arsenal. After all, he would come with a fairly hefty price-tag and Arsene Wenger isn’t exactly known for splashing the cash. There’s also the Tottenham link, but Modric has a history of treating Spurs fans pretty poorly (something that may endear him to this Arsenal side).

Luka Modric would certainly be a big step up on many of Arsenal’s current midfielders. Imagine if the talented Croatian was in the team ahead of the likes of Abou Diaby, Aaron Ramsey and Tomas Rosicky. Not only would it be a fitter team, but it would be a more creative, more energetic and more effective one.

With Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla in tow, Arsenal would surely have the most creative midfield in the Premier League. Whilst balance would surely be an issue, it would be hard to argue against this signing.

What’s your take? Would you take Luka Modric at the Emirates?
