Manchester United set to be snubbed by Bundesliga star, but this may be a GOOD thing:

|

1. Bundesliga: Hamburger SV - BV Borussia DortmundManchester United have not struggled for goals in any meaningful way this season. Yes, they’ve had their share of games where they’ve had to work hard, but with United, you always sense that a goal is going to come – and it always has.

Sir Alex Ferguson more or less assured that this would be the case, by stealing Robin Van Persie away from one-time rivals Arsenal. In the process of neutering the Gunners, Fergie ensured his team would never be short on goals and that he has a talismanic centre-forward who would always pop up when he needed him to do so.

RVP, along with Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck (an all-star attack – potentially the best forward line outside of Barcelona?) have not disappointed. As things currently stand, Manchester United have scored 60 Premier League goals already this season – more than any other team in the EPL.

Suffice to say, I don’t feel like Manchester United really need to be in the market for another striker. They have other priorities.

The Express recently ran a story that suggested Robert Lewandowski, Borussia Dortmund’s ace forward was set to ‘snub’ Manchester United, by turning down a summer deal. I have to say, I was amused when stories of United’s link to the Polish striker first surfaced. It just seemed completely unnecessary. Signing Lewandowski would be a complete indulgence. A costly luxury.

But the stories do have some semblance of credibility. After all, Sir Alex Ferguson is known for snapping up fresh attacking footballers whenever it’s available – whether he needs them or not. Last season he failed to find a place for talented forwards like Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov in the United first team. So what did he do? He sold them and brought somebody else in. The same could happen this summer.

The Express claim that Bayern Munich may beat United to the punch when it comes to Robert Lewandowski. This, to my mind, would be a good thing. It would force Sir Alex to focus on his midfield and may finally persuade him to make the investment that is necessary to secure the club’s long term future as title-challengers.

For once, I hope Fergie can drop his obsession with strikers and make an investment where it’s really necessary.

What’s your take? Are United missing out when it comes to Robert Lewandowksi?
