Liverpool have already completed what must arguably be the most important signing of their season. They’ve bought a strike partner for Luis Suarez, world-football’s most lonely forward.

Granted, Luis Suarez has been doing an admirable job all season, more-or-less single-handedly keeping Liverpool aloft in the middle of the Premier League table. But given the controversy that follows the Uruguayan about, and the fickle nature of the formbook, bringing in another striker to help ease the pressure was the most sensible thing Brendan Rodgers could have done.

What’s more Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool’s new recruit, is a player with a lot of potential. Yes, he’s lacking in fitness at the moment and still has a lot to learn, but at 23-years-old he’s got plenty of time and at Anfield, he’s found the right place to do his studying.

Still, good move though this was, Liverpool fans will be hoping that Brendan Rodger’s spending is not yet complete.

These individuals will thus be disappointed to hear the news that they’re set to lose out on one of their transfer targets to… Southampton. Surely Brendan can leverage the Reds history and strength in depth to beat the Saints to transfer targets? Surely talent would rather go to a club who could realistically compete in Europe over the next two-or-three seasons, than to a club that is desperately scrapping it out to avoid relegation.

The choice should be an obvious one for players and yet the Daily Mail claim that Southampton are set to beat Liverpool to sign Italian international Davide Astori.

This for me, would be a real shame. Astori is a highly thought of defender, who is available for a great price. Liverpool have offered £7m for Davide, but his club side, Cagliari are holding out for £12m.

Are the Reds really in a financial situation where they can’t afford to be duking it out with the Saints? Surely they can out-muscle them in this particular case?

Whilst Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger are dependable defenders, you can’t help but feel that Liverpool could use re-enforcements in this area. Defensive errors have been a part of the Reds game this season and with Aggers’ injury history it may make sense to purchase a reliable stand-in.

Astori, 25-years-old, has pedigree, ability and many good years ahead of him. He’d be an extremely smart purchase. So let’s hope that Brendan can fight off the Saints and secure a good deal for Liverpool FC.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool battle it out for Davide Astori?

Rodgers needs to ditch Carragher. I suppose he sticks with him as he doesn’t want to be stabbed in the back like Rafa was.

We really need dis kind of player in our team

Rodgers does not have any vision in buying players. He only buys young players who have no experience, and are unproven in the EPL. He thinks he is still managing Swansea. The idea of the “youth policy” is bullshit. If they only want to buy young players, then they should rather not buy anyone. They should just field the entire Liverpool youth team instead.

We already lost out on Gaston Ramirez to Southampton. LFC are an absolute joke at the moment when it comes to transfers. FSG claim they want to expand our global fan base to increase revenue streams, but in reality our transfer record for the last few windows is the worst of any team ever, the squad is worse, millions have been wasted and no one in their right mind is going to start supporting a mid-table team.

FSG (and the clowns in charge of scouting) have failed LFC. Miserably.

You will never be right all the time, but Sturridge will prove to be a great buy as for borini he has some good movement off the ball and will take awhile to settle but I feel he will be a very good squad player ( injury didn’t help) and ok after a very good start Allen seems to have lost form but all are young enough to have a good future once they have found there feet at the club properly and settled at the club. as for the yth players coming through they have been magnificent and will only get better to, So for me the yth policy and scouting is moving in the right direction as the scouts seem to be bringing names to the club fsg just don’t want to be paying over the odds anymore and seem to be prepared to miss out on a few players because of it, lets face it have the two spurs players who we lost out to lit the prem alight no so point proven for me. Give this lot a bit of time and see we’re we are middle of next season.
