Liverpool chasing Barcelona ace – but is he the right man for the job?

|

Despite losing 2-1 to Manchester United, Brendan Rodgers has found plenty of reasons to be cheerful over the past few days.

Firstly, Liverpool’s second half performance was admirable and kept United on the back-foot. I think it’s fair to say that the Reds would have clinched a point had the game continued for another 5-10 minutes.

Secondly, Brendan already appears to be vindicated in his decision to snap up Daniel Sturridge this January. Whilst there have been plenty of naysayers, it’s hard to argue against two goals in two games, despite Sturridge not being at full fitness.

Yes, Sturridge still has a long way to go to fully prove himself, but there’s no doubting he’s a natural goalscorer. At this stage, I wouldn’t want to bet against him!

But the hope remains that there’s still work to be done for Liverpool in the transfer market.

My personal hope is that Brendan Rodgers undergoes a major examination of the goalkeeping position.

With the greatest respect to Pepe Reina, who may well be deserving of Liverpool legend status, he’s clearly not half the keeper he used to be. The man that has regularly been voted amongst the Premier League’s top keepers, seems to have lost some of his mojo.

His shot-stopping ability has decreased, he’s not as agile as he used to be and Liverpool’s defenders don’t seem to have as much confidence in him. This may be down to some of the errors he’s made over the last couple of seasons.

The Reds still don’t concede too many goals, but I’d say that’s largely down to the likes of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel, not Pepe Reina.

Reina has been strongly linked to Arsenal, and should Arsene Wenger be willing to shell out a decent amount of cash, the time is now surely right for Liverpool to sell.

But who do the Reds bring in to replace him? According to The Express, Liverpool have lined up Victor Valdes as a replacement for Reina.

But surely Valdes, now 31-years-old, isn’t a good replacement for Reina? If Brendan is to sign a keeper, surely he should sign one with some potential re-sale value?

Yes, Valdes is a top keeper, who has won it all with Barcelona, but he’s now well and truly in the autumn of his career.

With Liverpool currently lingering in the middle of the table, it’s time for the club to look forward. I can’t help but feel that signing Valdes would be a step backwards. Wouldn’t signing somebody like Jack Butland be a better proposition?

What’s your take? Should Liverpool be in the market for Victor Valdes?

Signed valdes would be good business in my view remember van der sar for united he was older than valdes…if we want sell on value go get a young keeper aswel but thinking about sell on value is the wrong attitude in my opinion we are not a selling club and shouldn’t think like one!!!
