Former Real Madrid star wants a move to a ‘big’ club – time for Arsenal to declare their interest?

|

Fernando GagoI’m sure I’m not the only person who is underwhelmed by Arsenal’s links to Mohamed Diame.

I’m no snob – I understand that players within teams like West Ham and Wigan (Diame’s current and former club) can improve top teams like Arsenal, but I’m not sure he’d be the right choice for the Gunners.

Yes, he has some technical ability, but it seems he’s getting linked to Arsenal because of his physicality. The consensus seems to be that the Gunners need to add a little strength to their midfield, to counter-balance the passing games of Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla.

My feeling, however, is that the Gunners just need more quality in their midfield. When Jack and Santi are having a bad day, or need a rest, there are few others players who can fill the void.

Abou Diaby is a mixed-bag of a player, who gets it right only as often as he gets it wrong. He’s also a sluggish mover and not great positionally. Then there’s Aaron Ramsey who’s too slow on the ball and doesn’t seem to be a game-changer. Finally, Tomas Rosicky never seems to make any kind of impact as he spends 90% of a season out injured.

So yes: a little more physicality would be nice, but some quality would be better.

According to Spanish paper Marca, Argentinian ace Fernando Gago is looking to quit Valencia to join a club with a ‘big reputation’.

The former Real Madrid ace hasn’t settled particularly well in his new club and seems to want to move elsewhere to help re-ignite his career.

He’s 26-years-old and should be in the prime of his career. I’m not surprised if he’s looking for a little bit of inspiration and a fresh start.

After all, this is a player who made over 100 appearances for Real Madrid and 43 for Argentina. He has more than demonstrated his exceptional vision, high work rate and range of passing. He’s the kind of player who loves to be at the centre of the action and can often make the distance in a tight game.

So wouldn’t he be an excellent addition for a club like Arsenal? Could he be the high-quality signing that Arsene really needs to deliver to the fans?

His contract with Valencia runs until 2016, but if he really wants to leave, he could force the issue. It’s up to Arsenal to show their interest.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal target this former Real Madrid star?
