Manchester United fans disappointed with their side’s inability to see out a victory against Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, may well be cheered by this news: According to The Daily Star, Manchester United are hoping to announce the signing of Crystal Palace’s ace young winger, Wilfried Zaha in the next 48 hours.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been linked to Zaha since the January transfer window opened and it now looks like discussions are in their later stages.

The Star suggests that ‘the England winger could even be at United’s Carrington training HQ today to discuss terms and possibly complete a medical’. I’m not sure if this Daily Star writer could be any more vague or non-committal – ‘could even be’ and ‘possibly’.

Neymar ‘could even be’ completing a medical at United, ‘possibly’ with a view to an 8-year deal with the club. But I’d say that’s unlikely.

On the other hand, it doesn’t seem unlikely that Sir Alex would make a move for Zaha. He’s always been keen to snap up the best young talent and Wilfried Zaha certainly qualifies for this category. He’s a smart footballer, with pace, tricky feet and the confidence to take on his man. He’s direct and he has scored plenty of goals with Crystal Palace.

The Star claim that United will initially pay £7m for Zaha and that this fee could rise to £10m, or even £12m as a result of various add-ons. Further discussions are being had over the possibility of the 20-year-old being loaned back to Crystal Palace for the rest of the season.

I have to say, this seems a little too good to be true. Wilfried Zaha is one of English football’s best rated young talents and Palace aren’t really in a position where they have to sell. He’s destined for big things and proves his worth on a weekly basis. £7m, even with the various add-ons, is a genuine bargain for a player this highly-rated.

What’s more, he’d fit in very nicely at Old Trafford. With Nani’s future very much up in the air and Ashley Young continuing to underwhelm, the presence of a fresh young talent may help to fight complacency within the squad and keep their Premier League title tilt on target.

This may well end up being the bargain signing of the January transfer window.

What’s your take? Can Fergie really pull off a deal for Zaha at such a low price?
