Should Arsenal trigger this £15m release clause?

Whilst most Arsenal fans would surely wish that their club were pursuing Radamel Falcao, a mixture of pessimism and realism seems to temper expectation along these lines.

That’s why Chelsea get linked with players like Falcao, they have the money to stump up and a proven willingness to do so when the occasion arises. Arsenal on the other hand, have to be content to put up with getting linked to players like Adrian Lopez, Falcao’s partner in crime at Atletico Madrid.

Not to say that Adrian is a bad player – far from it – just that one is one of the best strikers in world football and that the other still has plenty to prove. What’s more, Adrian has fallen out of favour at Madrid.

He has registered just six appearances thus far this season and has been unable to replicate the performances he would put in on a regular basis last season. At 24-years-old, he’s about to enter the best stage of his career, but Wenger is likely to balk at his £15m price-tag (that’s the figure attached to the release clause written into his contract).

Still, the IB Times) claim that Wenger will look to secure the move when the transfer window re-opens next month.

It’s clear that Arsenal need another striker. They look desperately short up front and have often had to rely on goals coming from the midfield to secure results this season. Olivier Giroud lacks pace, Lukas Podolski lacks positional sense and Gervinho is lacking in everything. Theo Walcott may be a good solution, but he may well not be at the club much longer.

With his contract running down and due to expire this summer, it doesn’t surprise me that Wenger is weighing up his options.

Adrian Lopez would make a smart addition in this regard: he is versatile. He can play anywhere across Arsenal’s forward three and is just as adept as a winger as he is as a striker. This is likely to come in handy at the Emirates, where Wenger likes to mix things up.

Still, £15m seems like a lot of money to spend on a player who isn’t even getting game time this season. If Wenger can’t negotiate a fairer fee, then you have to hope that he’ll look elsewhere.

Arsenal can and should do better.

What’s your take? Are Arsenal right to chase Adrian Lopez?

We still need Theo and a proven Striker

  • Steve of Chiang Mai says:

Why would 15M be excessive for a guy of his class. Arsene paid 12+ for AOC – a raw kid who still has plenty to learn.

  • We need a complete player who can use both leg & physical & commited.pls dont hold money 2 much.example all player play 4 chealsea today are dictet by wenger like cahil, mata, hazard, oscar.guner all time.

  • Adah says:

Much has been heard and said about the young man of how good he could be to a club like ours. The truth is, Wenger cannot pay that amount making your request for our opinion a mere exercise. Does it not surprise u to hear that virtually every world class player- cr7, ibrahimovic etc- were all sighted and even contacted by our scouts but he won’t do biz. So lets continue on this path we have been subjected to.
