Will the best League please stand up?

|

Football has to be the most sensational thing man has ever come up with. Well, apart from fast foods if you ask me.  A hot debate is always brewing on the tongues of the sports’ faithful: and a common question is: ‘which is the best footballing League in the continent?’ We have the English league, Spanish La Liga, German Bundesliga, French Ligue 1, Italian Serie A and other notable ones, like the Scottish, Brazilian and the Dutch.

So how can we tell that a League is better than the next? Are they all created in the same image and likeness? Certainly not in my opinion. The various Leagues around Europe and beyond are outstandingly different from each other, ranging from the style of football played, to the amount of money spent.

Take an example like the Premier League. Fans all over the world always look forward to the transfer window spicing up the whole affair. After all is said and done, the total funds spent on teams is quite astonishing. With the English League, all clubs have the power to buy, though the big boys with more deep pockets outspend the rest.

I find the La Liga a bit biased, since the only teams that have the financial strength are Barcelona and Real Madrid. The same goes for the Bundesliga, where the only powerhouse capable of buying is Bayern Munich. The other clubs rely on player sales; that is, who to ship off, so in turn to get the money to buy. The Russian League has also bullied the market, with billionaires who have exclusively bank rolled the clubs. So the question stands, does money matter when it comes to branding one particular League, the best?

Is the league exciting and entertaining to watch? How is the fan base? All these count. One lot of people will say the English is the best, while another speaks out to defend the Spanish or the German. After what we witnessed last season victory goal from Sergio Aguero, I think it is fair to assume which is the better at entertaining.

As the Spanish League is dominated by the two powerhouses, the English has many contenders, any of whom can come out as winners at the end of the season. The thrills of late comebacks and trophy snatching goals excite the whole globe. The air of anxiety that fills fans over who will win the League is just overwhelming. Last day relegation battles have a way of adding to the excitement. The goals galore are to die for.

The style of play differs from one league to another. In Spain, they are famous for the Tiki Taka, the beautiful flair of ball passing, that mesmerizes all those who watch. In England, they have a direct approach to playing. The ball is worked by the midfield and then passed over to the striking front who attempt to score. Simple. No artistic footwork is required. Fans demand for goals, not caring how you’ll score them.

Italian teams play with the same perspective of direct football. However, the English League is assumed to be the hardest of them, all due to the pressure it comes with. All teams fight to the ‘death’ for three points.

But, I can’t help but feel that there are some really good Leagues that have not received the plaudits they deserve. The French Ligue 1 has been awfully underrated. More footballing pundits should turn their eyes upon it.

The bottom line remains, that the beauty of a League can only be seen by the fan. So let’s gather up and join in the debate. Stand and speak, which is the best league in your opinion. Until next time, have a lovely New Year and keep watching football.
