Manchester United wrap up their first deal of the January transfer window, but is it a good one?

Sir Alex Ferguson seems to have an insatiable desire for strikers. Despite having the best attacking line-up in England, it seems that he’s ready to take to the transfer market once more to bolster his striking line-up.

Whether you think he’s got his priorities all wrong or not, you have to admire his steadfast nature and his ‘another one can’t hurt’ attitude.

The player in question is Robert Lewandowski. Manchester United fans must be sick of the name by now. He’s a player that has been strongly linked to the Red Devils since last summer and his name seems to get brought up in conjunction with United every other week.

And now Ladbrokes have gone as far as to say that Fergie has already secured a five-year deal for Lewandowski. They quote Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc, claiming that it’s a ‘done deal’. United are set to shell out £12m this January and the Polish striker will make the switch from the Bundesliga to the Premier League.

Fans and pundits alike seem pretty bemused by this transfer. There are plenty of people wondering whether United really need another striker. After all, they’ve got Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez. Signing yet another forward may have a serious effect on the career of local boy and young talent, Danny Welbeck.

On the other hand, I’m pretty staggered by just how good this deal is, if what we’re hearing is true. £12m for a player of Robert Lewandowski is a bit of a coup for Sir Alex. This isn’t some up-and-comer. This is a striker who has proven himself in both the Bundesliga and at International level. He’s hit his peak and is likely to stay in it for some time now.

This year he has already scored 14 goals in 23 appearances for Dortmund. Last season he scored 30 goals in 47 appearances, leading his club to the Bundesliga title. He’s a winner and a natural goal-scorer, who could go on to be a club legend for Manchester United.

So yes, he’s a signing in an area that Manchester United don’t really need to improve. But does that make him a bad recruit? Absolutely not.

What’s your take? Will Robert Lewandowski fit in nicely at Old Trafford or is he an unnecessary addition?

Well no doubt man utd have one of the best attack in the premier leauge an the world at large but currently the problem bedeviling utd squad as it stands now is the lack of central mid-field. ferguson should heasting up in outwiting d current Mf problem not forwards any longer.

Think it gr8 news , puts pressure on strikers to play 4 there shirt , and if we pick u injurys in the latter part of season , you still have players of quality to do the business in striking department ,, still think midfield , and defence needs addressing ? Scholes , giggs been gr8 but past there sell by date , how will the new boys gain experience if they keep getting subed for the old boys ! Time friend of no one

Welbeck lacks the quality of playing for united. I think, he should be sacrificed.

Well, one good factor about Lewandowski is that he and Kagawa worked together quite famously at Dortmund. And so, it seems that this is one reason for having him knowing that Kagawa knows how to play up to him, the one-touching passing between them excellent.

As for Chicharito it has been said that he is not too happy playing in a super-sub role and if it remains such, then, he is then inclined to leave United. One team interested is Real Madrid. SO, PERHAPS because of this, the Lewandowski deal was closed. OR Sir Alex has a few new changes and variations in mind for United’s attack.

    Still, it is a steal!

This article makes complete sense to me, because i believe SAF will move Rooney to that Attacking Midfield role, leaving RVP & Lewandowski as first choice strikers, followed by Hernandez & Welbeck to complete the quartet.

This will give SAF more flexibility upfront and allow him to field different formations for EPL & CL games, including squad rotation.

Ferguson has done this before with Ronaldo, you may recall he was an out and out winger, and when SAF bought Nani, everyone was asking the same type of questions.

Another Midfield General will still be required though (we still haven’t replaced Keane or Hargreaves), SAF recognizes that his team must control the midfield for everything to work.

Plus, SAF needs to freshen up the defensive options, Ferdinand & Vidic will play less & less, so a new dominate partnership must be found.

GK: DeGea can be the number 1 for years to come, but needs to be more commanding.

In short, if you focus on the first eleven, you will miss the art of building a squad capable of winning all competitions.

      A common-sense evaluation.

Have faith in Fergie and he’ll come through, although I have my doubts about the veracity of this report of United wrapping up their first deal of the January transfer window.

Would it not, if true, be posted big time on United’s own website?

in my owmn words, it was not called for. With all the super strikers like RVP WR,DBeck, Chichahanandez, to mention but a few. All these need first team football n how is SAF gona please them all if not frustrate n loose them? Central Defence and Central midfield is what we United fans ask for.the amount of Lewandowski is not an issue but midfield n defence. Buy a world class of paul Scholes’ calibre n central defence of the Rio of 6years ago then u will c fire

  • Sign him fergie,he’s litl bit better than both Hernandez and welbeck.

  • Man u fan says:

It’s a great news ,and no need to change keeper ,he is a great talent in this age ,the problem is in central mid and united need defensive mid

  • legendnum7 says:

absolutely R.U.B.B.I.S.H….ill bet my life this deal wont go through…Fergie is not the buy and sell type of manager…if he “did” eventually get lewandoski,he would have to sell welbeck or chicharito WHICH would be pretty stupid…

  • moses joel says:

Fergie, welbeck must go he is not a complete strikers man u fans plz go and re watch man u everton ist leg and newcaste utd welbeck missed several chances he play more than chicharito this season welbeck fans ask ur self with how many goals?welbeck should be out of man utd.

  • Aks says:

Fergie should buy central midfielder and central defender rather than wasting money in striker force. I know he want lemo because of kagawa but kagawa can play with van persie and chicharito he just need to adapt in 4-4-2 system and english football.

  • Felix says:

Legendnum! Y r u so stupid 4 making such a coment? Are u 2 detect wht manager hv 2 do? We hv 2 respect SAF d way he handle transfer. Who believe dat RVP wil be a gud signing?if Lewandowski shd come, let him sell Welbeck 2 any premier leag club, since he failed 2 mature.

Fanx you all for your contribution, let compared their abilities. Lewandoski is a gr8 player wen its come to finishing dat what we expected 4rm STRIKER, & Hernandez wen he come to Charger your front line his best & Welbeck is really good on is OWN especially wen he play 4m side it add to our attacking line, but in my own perspective is not feet GREAT UNITED squad
