Is this transfer anything more than a pipe-dream for Liverpool?

Whilst Liverpool have started to grind out results against Premier League opposition during the last couple of weeks, I’m sure that most fans are hoping this wont affect Brendan Rodger’s spending during the transfer window.

Whilst Liverpool do look a better side than the one who started the season, only a fool would argue that this should result in Rodgers sticking rather than twisting in the transfer market.

The sensible thing to do at this stage, would be to attempt to build on what they’ve got. To try and do away with players like Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing, who appear to have little future with the club and make astute signings to replace them.

The key for Liverpool, will be making signings that will have a direct impact on the first team. The Reds already have enough talented youngster running around making a name for themselves. It’s time the Reds started dealing in world-class talent.

Which brings me to The Express’ claim that Liverpool are readying a bid for Barcelona winger Alexis Sanchez.

This, on the face of it, seems rather far-fetched. Can Liverpool really expect to tempt a player like Sanchez away from Barca, the world’s best footballing wide?

The truth is, however, Sanchez hasn’t been at his most effective this season. The Chilean has only managed to put away a single goal so far and may well start fearing for his place in the team should his bad fortune continue. By the time January rolls round, it’s not impossible that Barca would start listening to offers for the little winger.

Of course, the Reds would have to offer Barcelona a significant cash sum if they are to tempt them to sell one of their star attackers. What’s more, Liverpool are no longer a club that are considered to have a great deal of money. It’s enough to make you wonder how this transfer deal came about in the first place.

The fact is, however, if the Reds could pull off a deal of this magnitude, it would like engineer a reversal of fortunes for the Merseyside club. It would put Liverpool back on the map as a genuine force in the transfer market. It would pump belief back into the Anfield faithful.

So yes, it may be nothing more than a pipe-dream for Liverpool, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a rather attractive proposition for the club.

What’s your take? Can Liverpool still compete for a player like Alexis Sanchez?
