He’d find it difficult to say ‘no’ to Manchester United: Should Sir Alex snap him up?

Manchester United have been linked to Borussia Dortmund star Robert Lewandowski since last summer. The talented Polish forward has an eye for goal, but I have to say, I’ve never really understood the logic behind this particular rumour.

That’s not to say I don’t think he’s a good player. I think he could probably add a little more strength in depth to this Manchester United side. But is this really a priority?

Don’t United already have the best forward line in the Premier League? It’s pretty hard to beat Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney, but once you look past them, you still have both Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck there to provide competition. Sir Alex was so happy with his forwards that he was willing to move both Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen on last summer.

So why would he gallivant back into the transfer market and pluck up yet another striker? It just doesn’t seem to make sense.

And yet, it does seem that there’s a smidgen of truth to this story. The papers keep on recycling the rumour and the player himself has commented on the situation:

“For now I’m only thinking about Borussia Dortmund, but I can’t deny that it would be very difficult to say ‘no’ to a club like United. We’ll see what happens in January.” (Source: The Metro).

One thing’s for sure – Lewandowski’s form from the last couple of seasons has transferred over into this one. He has scored 14 goals in 23 games and remains a genuine threat in front of goal.

He certainly looks like a player who could perform at the very top level and lead Manchester United’s forward line.

Besides, hasn’t Sir Alex always been a restless soul? When it comes to attackers, he seems to like to amass the biggest stockpile of them possible. It keeps competitions rife amongst United players and acts as a motivational device for the team. It also ensure that Manchester United score a lot of goals.

So I wouldn’t be surprised if Fergie was genuinely considering this deal. And after delivering a fair amount of cynicism, I can’t help but feel that Lewandowski would be a smart addition for Manchester United.

Whilst I do think that a midfielder is a more important preference for the Red Devils, this is the route Sir Alex has taken in the past and it’s always been a successful one.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United finalise a deal for Robert Lewandsowski?
