What will happen to Arsenal if they lose Theo Walcott?

|

As sad as it is, Arsenal need Theo Walcott. There was a time, not so long ago when the thought of a player like Theo holding a club like Arsenal over a barrel would be laughable. Such has been the Gunners’ fall from grace, however, that Walcott’s contract situation has Arsenal fans up at arms.

But there’s more to it than desperation. Yes, Arsenal are in a poor shape at the moment. They lack balance, they lack belief and they lack fire. I won’t deny them their weaknesses. But the truth is, however, Theo Walcott has blossomed into a really quality player.

He doesn’t step onto the pitch nowadays without contributing meaningfully to the game. Take his goal at Euro 2012, or his substitute performances for Arsenal earlier this season. If you’re still not convinced, take a look at him leading his side to a ridiculous 7-5 victory over Reading in the Capital One Cup.

He’s the fastest player in the Arsenal squad. He’s the most athletic. He’s the best finisher (and has the biggest range of finishes in his armoury – he can chip it, curl it round keepers and smash it home – I hope that Olivier Giroud is picking up tips). So why on earth wouldn’t Arsenal do everything in their power to keep him? It doesn’t seem to make sense.

Arsenal can’t afford to let Theo take the same exit door out of the Emirates as the likes of Robin Van Persie and Samir Nasri. He doesn’t seem to have the same mercenary demeanour. Besides, if he wants a pay-rise, Wenger should grant it – because get this – he’s now one of Arsenal’s best players.

Former Arsenal player Adrian Clarke has had his say on the situation (who hasn’t?) and it’s difficult to disagree with him.

“There does come a point where they have to push the boat out just a little and see if we can give these star men what they want and build a team around them.”

Simple, but true. Arsenal can’t build a team if they keep chopping and changing. It’s time to stop twisting and start sticking. Without a solid formation, this Arsenal slump will continue. With something to build upon and improve, however, Arsene Wenger may be able to make Arsenal into a team that challenges for the title once more.

That’s no mean feat and it begins with getting Theo to agree new terms. Fingers crossed.

What’s your take? Does Theo Walcott have a future with Arsenal?

If Walcott moves,Arsenal have Ashvin and Chamak as strikers. That is assuming Wenger is satisfied with his squad. The latest draw means the defence is still a problem. The gunners can’t seem to see out games despite leading by 2-0.Imho,it seems like cancer afflicting the team.In fact Fulham could have won the game.
This latest result shows the gunners are not competitive. And that is why red faced is so nice to Wenger.Imagine your deadliest enemy becoming chummy towardsyou . It’s obvious the fm is no longer athreat to red faced domination.
If Wenger doesn’t sign two or three top guys in Jan,forget about 4th place.Tht could also mean he may have to go after presiding over the decline of the gunners starting from 2005.
