Why it’s time for Manchester United to turn to experience in the transfer market:

When it comes to defenders, more so than any other position on a football pitch, it makes sense to look to experience. Whilst youthful exuberance can reap results further up the pitch, it’s often costly in defensive positions.

After all, the less experienced you are, the more likely you are to make a mistake. For this reason, I’ve been hoping that Sir Alex Ferguson doesn’t go after another young defender (like Chris Smalling or Phil Jones) and instead opts for a more well-rounded individual.

It’s clear that Manchester United have real issues in amongst their back-four. When you see Michael Carrick playing as a central-defender, you know that trouble’s brewing. As it is, Nemanja Vidic has real injuries problems, whilst Rio Ferdinand’s career seems to be winding down.

How much longer United can persist is unclear. Without reinforcements, it could cost them the title. It’s pleasing, therefore, to see United get linked to a defender with some pedigree.

The man in question is Diego Lugano, who talkSPORT claim represents a genuine transfer target for Manchester United. The 31-year-old, who has 72 caps for Uruguay (and is captain for his national side) is currently a PSG player. Yet he did not make their Champions League squad listing this season and may well fancy a move to a club where he’s more trusted.

Manchester United may fancy a move for a player who would still be eligible for the Champions League and offer them plenty of experience. Before moving to PSG, he was an important player for Fenerbache, accruing 125 appearances (grabbing 21 goals in the meanwhile – a great return for a centre-back).

Injuries and poor form have seen his opportunities limited at a Paris Saint-Germain side who have used their money to create an impressive squad. As a result, Lugano looks to be surplus to requirements. The player himself has spoken out regarding his treatment:

“I’m worried because I have no chance to play [at PSG]. What hurts me is to learn from the press that I wasn’t included in the list for the Champions League. I think I deserve better treatment. I work tirelessly and I’m training hard.“

Lugano deserves another shot at a top side. We all know what he can offer. If PSG are willing to let him go for a reasonable price (it’s not like they’re in need of money), United should snap him up.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Diego Lugano at Old Trafford?
