Huntelaar: Liverpool’s new Messiah?

|

Liverpool remain a club with standards. Unfortunately, they have had no impressive results in the Premier League for some while. Right now, the Reds suffer a lack of goal producing strikers and are holding an unexpectedly poor twelfth place in the table. Rodgers, let Andy Carroll go and bought £10 million pound AS Roma striker Fabio Borini. The Italian is out due to a broken foot. Dirk Kuyt left The Reds to dig up some dollars in Turkey. The only experienced striker still standing is Luis Suarez.

Ambitious but not yet celebrated Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, is desperate to sign Schalke 04 center striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. According to magazine VI the 29 year old might play for Liverpool next year. The hunt for “the  Hunter” is understandable, since the Dutch striker is a guarantee for goals in the Bundesliga, as well in the Dutch national team. Huntelaar has never made any secret of his desire to play with the stars of the Premier Leaugue. But will Huntelaar choose Liverpool?  A less possible outcome, unless the primary objective is a well-paid salary . The Gun from Gelsenkirchen, is not the typical guy in a world of prejudices. He likes to spot birds and read books.  I tend to believe him when he says he wants to win prizes in his Indian football summer and play for an internationally successful team. Or did I just hear the echo of his compatriot Robin van Persie, explaining why he left Arsenal?

Huntelaar, who is a free agent after this season, knows that his present club lack the means for reinforcements. Although Schalke wants to extend the contract of Huntelaar, he didn’t start negotiations with manager Horst Heldt. “It is about the right feeling” – Huntelaar expresses his doubts. Right now Liverpool can’t offer more success than the his currently second ranked club.

If Huntelaar does make the move, Rodgers, the manager has to adjust his team. Huntelaar – when leaving Heerenveen for Ajax –always wanted to play close to the competitor’s goal, as a center-forward in a team with wingers.  A combination with his former Ajax teammate Luis Suarez might well work out. In the first season they played together (Ajax 2007) Huntelaar scored 33 times in 34 appearances. So Suarez as a co-striker, or better, a winger – as suggested this week – might result in a deadly combination. At clubs where he resided two or more years, he reached  in top years goal ratios of at least 0.90 goals a game. On the other side I have to mention he was less efficient when he was not striker number one in top class competitions. (Real Madrid and AC Milan).

So what is your impression… Can Huntelaar be the new messiah?
