Another weekend, another dismal Arsenal performance in the Premier League. If things continue in this vein, the Gunners are in danger of becoming the next Liverpool – enterprising in the cup competitions (they’re progressing nicely in the Capital One Cup and the Champions League) at the expense of progress in the Premier League.

But as many pundits will tell you – the Premier League is your ‘bread and butter’. It’s the true testing grounds for the quality of a team. 38 games against all manner of opposition tends to give you a fairer picture of a team than the crazed, adrenaline-fueled nights of Champions League football. So it’s in the League that Liverpool need to find their feet and at the moment, they just don’t look up to the task.

The problem, it seems, is with strength in depth. The Gunners set out against Aston Villa without many of their star men: Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Bacary Sagna and they paid the price.

Most telling however, was the moment when Arsene Wenger took off Arsenal’s lone striker, Olivier Giroud and replaced him with his compatriot, defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin. If this had happened when Arsenal were a goal or so to the good, then there would be no problem. The fact that it happened when Arsenal were still struggling to make the breakthrough is somewhat revealing: Arsenal need another striker and quick!

Which is why I’m intrigued by this story in the Daily Mail: it’s claimed that Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is ready to join Arsenal this January. They claim that the Dutchman ‘dreams’ of playing at the Emirates and is ready to make the move now that his international rival Robin Van Persie is no longer at the club – isn’t the Dutch national team a barrel of laughs?

More importantly, the Mail also claims that he’d be available at just £6m because of his contract situation (he’ll be available for free next summer). He was the Bundesliga’s top scorer last season and at that kind of price he’d represent an absolute bargain. Arsene Wenger’s known for sniffing out the best possible deals in the transfer market and Huntelaar is certainly up there.

The Gunners need firepower and the Schalke 04 front-man looks ready to move on from the Bundesliga. It’s a move that seems to make a lot of sense. Let’s hope that Wenger can push it through and avoid competition from other interested parties.

What’s your take? Should Arsene look to bring Huntelaar to the Emirates?
