Manchester United finally looked back to their best with a 3-0 victory against Newcastle, but concerns still persist as to whether Sir Alex Ferguson’s side has the potential to launch a concerted title-charge this season.

They were pipped to the post by the most by their eternal rivals, Manchester City, last season, forcing Fergie to get active in the transfer market. Whilst he’s made some smart signings (including somehow managing to persuade Arsene Wenger to sell him the best striker in the world) there’s some areas that need additional work. Manchester United certainly need to take a look at their midfield, but it’s the defense that needs the most work.

I’m sure that fans are tired of seeing United forced into fielding players out of position and adjusting to the injuries of the more experienced players. When it comes to the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, there seems to be no guarantee that they’ll ever get a decent run of games in the squad. To compound matters, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have also been sidelined by injuries. Perhaps the best solution is to be found in the January transfer market?

It’s somewhat pleasing to see 4-4-2 link Manchester United to Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels. It’s claimed that Sir Alex is weighing up a £28.2m bid for the ace defender – a figure that would surely force the Bundesliga side to pause for thought.

Manchester United haven’t been afraid to raid Borussia Dortmund (a real hotbed of talent in the Bundesliga) in the past. Last summer they sprung for Shinji Kagawa and they’ve also been linked to Robert Lewandowski in the past. I can’t help but hope, however, that Sir Alex manages to force this one through.

Yes, it’s an awfully large amount of money to spend on a centre-back. But given United’s needs, it’d be a smart investment. At just 23-years-old, the German ace has a big future ahead of him. Now would be the right time to snap him up. He’s been a lynchpin for Dortmund’s double-title winning side. Whilst he’s not exactly slow, his main strength is his expert reading of the game. He’s known for his ability to intercept and win the ball back Best of all, he doesn’t seem to get nervous when he’s on the ball. He’s capable of spraying it about very nicely.

All these attributes should make him an extremely attractive prospect for Sir Alex – despite his price-tag.

What’s your take? Would Hummels be a good addition at Old Trafford?

Fergie should do everything in his power to buy this player.
I rate him equal to Vidic.

Definitely agree with the first comment. Hummels would be a perdect fit to our defense.

    Perfect match*

We have a habit of looking and admiring other teams players that we like. I think Ferguson is sometimes the only one who believes in the young players we have. We could go out and spend £30 million on Hummels. The guy is a fantastic defender and has 10 solid years ahead of him. Its not, however, the way forward for Man Utd. We need to focus on the young defenders we have in the squad.

The lack of patience and appreciation or players we have does lead to always looking at who we can sign. I think Ferguson will still believe in Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. He will be looking at those three to establish themselves and become top world defenders on their own right.

  • Peter says:

He is a great player but you forget that BVB are not in a position where they are forced to sell any players. Hummels just renewed his contract til 2017 or 2018 so 30 million is far too small of a payment.

  • henry says:

Bringing him will strenghten the defence but Sir Fergie pls buy central midfilder.
