Why Liverpool should leave this potential signing for Manchester United:

What’s Liverpool’s most pressing weakness this season? Is it their defence? Whilst they’ve leaked goals this season, in a rather unfortunate manner, I find it a little harsh to blame Liverpool’s central defenders. The fact is, the Reds have been unable to present a unified front (although they’ve looked much improved over the last week or so). They haven’t looked like a proper team and their midfield has been regularly cut apart without an imposing figure like Lucas Leivas helping Liverpool to dominate their opposition.

But Brendan Rodgers most pressing concern must surely be his strike-force. Having sent his most expensive forward (Andy Carroll) on loan to West Ham, Liverpool are looking drastically short upfront. Whilst Luis Suarez seems to be thriving on the additional responsibility that this has afforded him, it’s clear that Rodgers needs a long-term solution.

So it’s a little surprising to see Liverpool so consistently linked to central defenders. The latest of which, according to Calcio Mercato, is Turkish International Semih Kaya.

He has picked up six caps for Turkey and been a regular fixture at the heart of Galatasaray’s defence. During his time at the club, he’s earned the nickname, ‘the rock’ and he’s not named after the Michael Bay film, or the popular wrestler turned actor. He’s earned this name as a result of his willingness to put his body on the line, make telling tackles and bully opposition strikers out of the game. The name makes sense – he’s a difficult object to push aside.

His physicality and tenacity make him a difficult nut to crack. At just 21-years-old, I’m not surprised that there’s been interest in him from some of Europe’s top clubs. Manchester United are thought to be interested, and you have to say, he may be a better fit at Liverpool’s rivals, rather than at Anfield.

Galatasaray vice-president Durust has more-or-less confirmed the Red Devil’s interest: “It is true to say that Sir Alex Ferguson had talked with our president about Semih. He asked for the price of a possible transfer, but that question is yet to be answered.” (Source: The Metro).

According to the Metro, Semih has been valued in excess of £15m. A healthy sum, no doubt related to his status as something of a defensive prodigy. Nonetheless, I don’t feel that this is an area Liverpool really need to strengthen, especially not at that price.

Maybe Brendan Rodgers should leave this one for Manchester United?

United need midfielders, Liverpool need forwards, why does that preclude Liverpool from needeing a center back? Ridiculous. We need a 2nd string partner for Coates as back up for Skrtel and Agger for when Carragher retires so he is a great target for Liverpool. Being a young player he will have more of a chance of playing time than in Liverpool than in Slur Alex’s ageing defense that he refuses to stop relying on. At least make an argument to your theory if you’re going to publish an “article”.
