Could this £10m signing add consistency to Manchester United’s midfield?

Manchester United may have been the only British side to record a win in the Champions League last week, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t without their own problems.

I’m sure, for instance, that Sir Alex Ferguson would have been disappointed with his side’s first half performance. Manchester United went two-goals down within the space of twenty minutes and looked incapable of keeping pace. Sure they turned it round, but that first-half performance was somewhat symptomatic of United’s season.

At the moment, they’re wildly inconsistent. One day they’ll perform and the next they’ll get run ragged by the likes of Everton and Tottenham. It could well be a long season.

I’m sure fans will be hoping that Sir Alex takes to the transfer market this January to help provide his side with the capacity for more consistent performances. In this regard, they could do a lot worse than snapping up Celtic’s midfield-dynamo, Victor Wanyama.

According to the Daily Mail, both United and City are interested in the 21-year-old. Wanyama has drawn some comparisons to Cheick Tiote, as he’s a real physical presence in the heart of midfield. He works hard, snaps into challenges and more often than not, comes away with the ball. He’s also got a good reading of the game and tends to be in the right place at the right time. Moreover, I don’t want to underplay his ability to move the ball about the pitch.

These credentials have earned him a £10m price-tag – not too shabby for a player of his age (and one that’s currently plying his trade in the SPL).

In the last week, we’ve heard from Wanyama’s agent Ivan Modia, who illuminated what many people already expected. In regards to extending his Celtic contract he said: “We had a meeting with Celtic in the first week of October and the proposal was rejected shortly after the meeting. We have not held further discussions and it is up to Celtic if they want to resume talks with a different proposal.’

That strikes me as something of a sign that Wanyama views his future as being at someplace other than Celtic Park. With his contract up in two years time, I’m sure that Sir Alex wouldn’t find it difficult to persuade Celtic to sell. Best of all, he’s got the ability and tenacity to add a little more force to Manchester United’s midfield. Who knows just how good he’ll be in a couple of years?

What’s your take? Should Manchester United be in the market for contract rebel Victor Wanyama?
