At £15m, he’d represent the perfect Arsenal replacement for Theo Walcott:

I have to say, I’ll be quite sorry to see Theo Walcott leave Arsenal. Yes, I haven’t forgotten that he’s a drastically inconsistent talent. He’s equally capable of frustrating as he if of amazing. He may not be the most astute or intelligent footballer (on the pitch at least – he seems like a bright young lad otherwise) but he sure as heck is entertaining. We all know how entertaining it is to see him put on the afterburners and roast a full-back.

When he’s running directly at a back-four, he’s a sight to behold. Best of all, he’s a great finisher. The way he’s able to put shape on a ball and guide it round a keeper into the back of the next is somewhat reminiscent of Thierry Henry. I know that not everybody shares these views, but I do think it would be a mistake not to do everything it takes to ensure he agrees new terms.

As things stand, however, Theo’s Arsenal contract will be up by the summer and the youngster will likely move on. Though he’s spoken positively about the club and his desire to stay, the fact that he’s yet to agree terms is worrying. It makes sense that Arsene Wenger would begin to prepare for an Arsenal without Theo Walcott. This may well involve entering the January (or summer) transfer market and making a new addition.

Which brings me to this transfer rumour, featured in a recent edition of the Daily Mirror: they suggest that Arsenal have Atletico Madrid’s Adrian Lopez in mind as a replacement for Theo Walcott. As replacements go, Adrian would be a fairly good solution.

Indeed, there are numerous comparisons to be made between the two players. Both have faced time on the sidelines this season as a result of stalling on a new deal. Both have pace and can score goals (Adrian grabbed 18 La Liga goals last season).

Adrian has a rumoured £15m buy-out clause written into his contract and may represent something of a bargain given his contract situation. He’s clearly ready to move on and may have forced Madrid into a corner when it comes to negotiations.

As I’ve mentioned, I don’t want to see Theo Walcott leave the Emirates. But should that end up being the case, Adrian would represent an excellent replacement. At 24-years-old, he’s just about entering his peak and now represents the perfect time for Arsenal to swoop.
