Are Arsenal already too far off the League leaders?

I think it’s fair to say that Arsenal’s return from the International break could hardly have gone any worse. Rather than roaring back into action, they let out a meek whimper and succumbed to a 1-0 defeat by Norwich City.

As is often the case, Arsenal had the lion’s share of the possession and moved the ball about quickly, but still couldn’t find a way through the Canaries. It was disappointing to see Arsenal players working hard, trying to pick holes and not getting anywhere. Norwich City were too well organized and the Gunners often appeared to be on completely different wavelengths. As a result, they suffered their first defeat against Norwich since 1992.

Naturally, the result and the performance has Arsenal fans concerned about whether this team can compete for the Premier League title this season. Given that Arsene Wenger’s side is already 10 points behind League leaders Chelsea, the Gunners may have to re-assess their priorities this season.

Speaking after the game, Wenger admitted he had some concerns about his side: “The gap at the top is unpleasant. We had an opportunity to close the gap but we didn’t. It does worry me but what is more disappointing is we didn’t score… It was a poor collective offensive performance, although we have scored goals up until now.”

And that, for me, is the major concern. This looks to be the least threatening Arsenal side for some time. We’re used to the Gunners failing to perform defensively, but the lack of clarity and potency up front is now a more pressing issue. And it’s one with no clear solution.

Olivier Giroud seems to win headers, without actually directing them anywhere near an Arsenal player. He’s also frustratingly goal-shy for a player who brings so much pedigree with him from France. Gervinho looks like he’s returned to his very worst form and now seems entirely unable to do simple things like trapping a ball, or staying onside.

Meanwhile, Theo Walcott is injured and Lukas Podolski is forced out wide. As a result, Arsenal look like a side without any invention, despite the fact that Santi Cazorla is pulling the strings in the middle of the park.

The larger consequence, however, is that this Arsenal side just does not look capable of competing for the Premier League title this season. Indeed, they may struggle to claim fourth place this season. Let’s hope that Arsene Wenger finds a solution – and quick.

What’s your take? What can Arsenal achieve this season?

I think is too late for Arsenal to reach the top. 10 points behind is a lot in PL.
