Why it’s time for Liverpool to join the rest of the Premier League and raid Dortmund:

Borussia Dortmund is a real hotbed for talent. After dominating the Bundesliga last season, the Premier League seems to have taken notice of BVB. Slowly but surely, the EPL seems to be dismantling their squad on a player by player basis.

Nuri Sahin left a couple of seasons back (admittedly for Real, but he’s now with Liverpool). Arsenal and Manchester United have spent time pursuing Mario Gotze (the Gunners ended up with young Thomas Eisfeld instead, whilst United ended up going for Japanese International Shinji Kagawa). Then there’s forward Robert Lewandowski, who has attracted interest from a number of clubs.

The latest name to add to that list is Dortmund’s ace winger, Kevin Grosskreutz. According to CalcioMercato, Liverpool are looking to swoop in and pluck up the German International this January.

The 24-year-old winger has risen to prominence over the last couple of seasons, helping Dortmund grab back-to-back titles. Yet it’s now believed that he’s looking to leave the Bundesliga and start afresh in a new League. Liverpool could do a lot worse.

The Reds aren’t that strong out on the wings, with players like Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson (who’s probably a central midfielder) failing to make their mark. They need a player who can provide penetration and help provide their strikers with more opportunities. Grosskreutz could provide this.

Some fans may feel like a move like this would curb the development of Raheem Sterling. But this, for me at least, is nonsense. If he’s good enough, he’ll break through regardless. What’s more, it’s not healthy for the club, or the player to place such a weight of expectation on a 17-year-old. He’s a young player (and undoubtedly one to watch) but Brendan Rodgers needs to be wary of putting too much pressure on him so early in his career.

Dortmund’s ace winger could be the solution. Best of all, he’s spoken previously about his affection for Liverpool: I love Borussia, but I cannot rule anything out. It would be a dream to play for Liverpool at some point. England is a dream for any footballer.”

The quote’s old, but I doubt his opinion has changed. I personally hope that this is one Brendan considers over the January transfer window. Liverpool need better options in this department and Grosskreutz would represent a significant upgrade.

What’s your take? Would you take the German winger at Anfield?
