What is wrong with Ronaldo?

Cristiano Ronaldo has spent his career as someone that craves the media spotlight and attention, over the years he has found many ways to grab this attention and not all of it has come from his performances on the pitch. In the last week, that Ronaldo has returned with his claims that he is “sad” at Real Madrid. Is this a craving for a move somewhere else, more money or simply media attention?

Firstly, I don’t believe he will move anywhere as there are so few clubs that would be able to afford him. Talk of a move to Manchester City was inevitable but highly unlikely due to the hatred City fans have for Ronaldo and Ronaldo would never like to upset the United fans that hail him as a legend.

However, a return to United is also out of the question, as United certainly couldn’t afford him and Ferguson would refuse to go back in for a former player that started to believe he was bigger than the club. The only clubs in the world that would probably be able to afford the huge transfer fee Real Madrid would demand are Paris Saint-Germain or Anzhi Makhachkala, the two newest money men in world football. Why would Ronaldo, 27, leave the most successful club in history to move to a fairly average league?

On one hand, these two clubs would be able to severely increase Ronaldo’s salary, who is currently the world’s 10th highest paid player. Despite this, the Portuguese attacker believes he will one day take the Ballon D’or back from Lionel Messi but if he moves out of La Liga, Premier League or Bundesliga then that dream will be ended as to be the best player in the world he has to play the best teams on a regular basis. Therefore it is very unlikely that Ronaldo would consider leaving Real Madrid while he still has unfinished business with them so what is really wrong with him?

Ronaldo may be looking for Real Madrid to offer him a more lucrative contract in order for them to keep him or he may be looking to see his name all over the newspapers once again. There is also the possibility that he may simply not be enjoying life in Madrid but with a personality like Ronaldo’s I feel there is something complex involved in this.

No one can be sure what Ronaldo is seeking from these claims that he is “sad” but I find it hard to believe that he can be genuine when he is playing for one of the greatest teams in the world in one of the greatest cities in the world, with such a healthy salary.
