Beggars can’t be choosers: why Liverpool have to snap up this free-agent

Whilst a number of people are pulling the Reds apart for a lackluster performance against Arsenal on the weekend, I think some of the criticism was misplaced. I felt like the Reds moved the ball about quite nicely (though Steven Gerrard was uncharacteristically sloppy) and only really struggled when they entered the final third. The problem, is not with creativity, but finding some cutting edge.

Luis Suarez spent most of the game looking to win a penalty, content to go to ground at the slightest contact from an Arsenal defender, instead of looking to take the ball on and trouble the inexperienced Vito Mannone. Fabio Borini was pushed out wide and struggled to make an impact on the game. And outside of those two, Liverpool have very few options. It was a far cry away from last season, when Arsenal had to rely on two pieces of magic to steal the game away from an ascendant Liverpool side.

But I’m not here to criticize Liverpool’s transfer dealings (though, let me go on record to say that it was the Reds’ second shambolic summer in a row). I’m more interested in considering the solution.

According to ESPN, Brendan Rodgers is weighing up a move for free-agent Michael Owen. He’s free to sign for a new team outside of the transfer window, so long as it gets done before Liverpool submit their finalized 25-man squad sheet for this season.

Now, there’s obviously some history here. Michael Owen didn’t cover himself in glory with the way he left Liverpool. He sullied his reputation with the fans when he went on to sign for Manchester United. But could he be just what the Reds need at this exact moment in time?

As things stand, Michael Owen’s available and Liverpool are in desperate need of a striker. It may not be a perfect fit, but beggars can’t be choosers. It would be a marriage of convenience, but that doesn’t mean good things couldn’t come of it.

Michael Owen may be able to re-build his reputation in Liverpool. The Reds could get their hands on a natural goal-scorer and who may be able to keep their season on course until January. Seems like a win-win to me. So perhaps it’s time that the fans put the past behind them.

What’s your take? Given the circumstances, would you take Michael Owen back at Anfield?

His days are long gone. The pace of the game now is too fast for him. Thats the reason he was released by Manu. No way BR!!!!

Cant do any worse than our current strike force.

    How about this

Sell Suarez in January for around £30m?

Bring in Walcott, Sturridge & Huuntelaar?

Dont shoot me, but Suarez is creative just has no end product. We dont know what Borini is like as a CF yet so why not?

WHATS THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO REDEEM HIMSELF YNWA B’R COME ON YOU RED MEN !!!!!!

  • Andy says:

Suarez should have been the first person out of the door in July but Rodgers would just have bought rubbish with the money. See Borini, complete garbage.

  • RED4LIFE says:

SELL SUAREZ ARE YOU MAD ONE OF ARE BEST PLAYERS JUST NEED TO ADD TO HIM IN JAN I BET YOU WONT BE SAYING THAT NEAR THE END OF THE SEASON WHEN HE’S ARE TOP SCORER YNWA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lads, Suarez is a great player, who for all the skill in the world could not hit the barn door if he tried all day long. HE IS A SUPPORT STRIKER – Get him to create or ship him out!!

Borini could be a David Villa or a Dirk Kuyt. Why is it that LFC have a bad habit of turning strikers into right wingers??

Fine, Michael Owen left us for Real Madrid! But he wanted to come back, albeit Rafa refused to pay £17M for him – why should he, having gone for £6M!!

So Owen went to Newcastle, and then roughly 3 years later was released. He AGAIN wanted to come back home to Anfield, but he was not given a chance. He got a chance at Man Utd and took it. Some might call him “Judas”, but you have to admit that he still looked deadly, (on the few occasions that he played) in front of goal.

My humble opinion is that Owen comes back home – As a super-sub, he could get at least 10-15 goals, which may be the difference in challenging for a top 4 finish and a relegation scrap!!

Owen lost a yard and a half of pace after a torn abductor muscle injury before we shipped him off to Real. He never got his pace back. Certainly has some sparks of trickery. Fox in the box? Possibly of the bench. The young strikers could learn a lot from Owen.

  • Shamskay says:

How can u possibly say Suarez should av been sold. Lol. Wen he signed a new contract, were u nt happy? Owen should be given a chance. Just sign him till January wen we will get d needed striker. We need 2 be a get along supporter. YNWA
