Why this is the kind of transfer target that Tottenham ought to be chasing:

|

Tottenham’s single biggest need this summer? Signing a striker who can deliver the goals they so sorely need to earn Champions League football. Whilst Spurs didn’t make any real progress last season in terms of the Premier League table, you get the feeling that this is a side that keeps evolving and getting stronger. All they lack is someone who can lead the line and grab 20-30 a season. Of course, scouring the transfer market for somebody who can provide this is no easy matter.

So when a big name makes himself available, you hope that Andre Villas-Boas is paying attention. Such is the case with Hugo Llorente, who has ‘put Premier League clubs on alert’ after asking Athletic Bilbao if he could leave the club. The Mirror link him to Tottenham, but also mention that he’s looking to join a club that’s in the Champions League. Isn’t there a little discrepancy here?

Whether or not that rules him out of a move to Tottenham remains to be seen. After all, Spurs are a deeply ambitious side and will surely hope to be a part of the Champions League set-up by next season.

But with Tottenham on the lookout for a striker, I can’t help but feel that the perfect man for the job would be the player who helped knock Manchester United out of the Europa League. That’s not just based on his performances in Europe this season. I think he is entirely worthy of all the praise he has been getting.

He’s a great target man, is dominant in the air and more than capable along the ground. He has pace and power and will score goals (30 goals in 53 appearances this season). If he’s willing to leave Bilbao and the club are willing to sell I hope that Tottenham try to get involved with the bidding war for his signature. White Hart Lane may be a tough sell for the talented Spaniard, but that shouldn’t stop the club trying.

There’s no word on how much he’d cost. However, with Luka Modric’s future uncertain, Spurs may be about to receive a massive cash injection. Shouldn’t this money be reimbursed on a striker with proven talent?

What’s your take? Am I living in a dream world here? Can Tottenham compete for Llorente? Is he a lost cause, or can Villas-Boas convince him to join his project?

Yes he would be a great signing.
However, WE ARE NOT GOING TO PAY ANTWHERE NEAR WHAT IS BEING QUOTED. How many players are we linked with at relatively high fees being required? How many of those do we get?
We’re linked with most of them. We get, let me count this up. NONE.

  • Justin(SydenhamYid) says:

    What happened there?
We are linked with all the top players every transfer window. How many of them do we sign?
Give me a minute to get my calculator out.
I never expected this but here it is: NONE!
WE WILL NOT PAY THE MONEY REQUIRED.
