It’s been a little depressing to see Giovani dos Santos’ career disintegrate since joining Tottenham back in 2008. The club signed him even though there wasn’t a real need for a player of his kind and as a result his career stagnated. Loan moves to Ipswich Town, Galatasaray and Racing Santander have hardly been the catalyst to breathe his career back into life. This is a player who once looked to have a chance of a career at the mighty Barcelona, but has now been hung-out to dry.

It’s not like Tottenham’s need for him has grown over the years. It’s time for Andre Villas-Boas to do what Harry Redknapp didn’t: let him go.

Tottenham’s big need this summer, other than signing a couple of strikers, has been to sign a new keeper. Brad Friedel isn’t getting and younger and Tottenham’s back-ups just aren’t reliable. This need has seen Spurs linked to Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, but no deal appears to be forthcoming.

This seems to have led to Villas-Boas looking elsewhere. Indeed, this story, run by ClubCall combines two of Tottenham’s biggest needs to create a perfect solution: resolving the Dos Santos situation and signing a new keeper. They claim that the young Mexican could be sold in part exchange for Inter Milan’s ace keeper Julio Cesar. Wouldn’t that be ideal?

They run with the following quote from Dos Santos’ agent, Vincent Montes: “An exchange with Julio Cesar? Journalists often speaking without knowing things but in this case is not so. Inter is one possibility, I do not deny. The truth is that Gio has always expressed his preference for La Liga or Serie A and this is our intention.”

If Gio fancies a move to Serie A, there are few better clubs to join than Inter Milan. You get the feeling that he’d get more opportunities at the San Siro and would enjoy the Champions League football and the opportunity to rebuild his career.

As for Tottenham, they’ll get a man in return who was voted the third best keeper in the world back in 2009. He’s 32-years-old and has much longer to go in his career than the likes of 41-year-old Brad Friedel. He remains one of the best keepers in the world and would be an excellent last line of defence for Tottenham.

All-in-all, it’d be a swap deal that would work out massively in Spurs’ favour. They’d lose a player that they never used and earn a player they would. Win-win.

What’s your take? Should Tottenham look to pull off a swap deal for Cesar?

Get in Butland. Friedel has another great season ahead and Butland can learn so much. this young lad will be the one to replace Joe hart in the near future or at least push him.

I don’t know why Spurs would want to transfer or swap a player of the calibre of Gio dos Santos. We are short in the midfield and the forward line plus the guy can play effectively on the right wing yet we seek to be rid of him. The guy is better than both injury prone Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela and shines against tough international competition. Gio is a star, so why not give him a better chance more than just 17 almost meaningless games in Lilywhite since 2008? Strange, very strange.
