The ONE signing that Manchester United and Man City need to make?

|

Last season provided one of the most entertaining seasons of football for English football, with key examples including Chelsea’s enthralling Champions League journey which saw them beat a dogged Bayern Munich team in their own back yard, to Cardiff’s Carling Cup campaign, where they fell just short to a Liverpool side who beat the Championship side on penalties after Cardiff has scored a late equaliser in extra time. Beyond, and by far the most exciting example of the unpredictability that English football has experienced was in the Premier League, in which both sets of Manchester fans were put through a rollercoaster of emotions, with Aguero firing an injury time goal to give Manchester City the title.

Although these two clubs went head to head to fight for the title through last season, there is genuine belief amongst fans of the clubs who finished outside the top 2 that the gap can be reduced, with both the London clubs bringing in new talent already. I have listed one signing that each of the top teams could possibly make to push their title chances.

Man City
Many believe that the English champions will not need to strengthen as their signings from the previous season will now have settled, and contribute more to the teams efforts to retain the title. From a Man City point of view, they will be disappointed that there hasn’t been any movement, with clubs around them getting players in, and Mancini has made it public that he is disappointed that the club haven’t made any significant strides to bringing in any new faces.

With star players in most positions for the club, the only place I believe they can be further strengthened will be in the middle of defence, with strong cover not being provided when the pairing of Lescott and Kompany are not in the heart of the defence.

There are strong reports that the blue half of Manchester are targeting Daniel Agger, with many believing his performances for Liverpool will earn him a spot in the starting 11, with his adaptability to deploy a left back position as well as centre back. A reported fee of £22 million would be enough to land the Dane, and many would be surprised if Manchester city didn’t splash out once again to improve an already strong team.

Manchester United
Falling just behind their city rivals, Manchester united know there is a fine line between success and being second in footballing terms. Before other teams began summer spending, the Red Devils would have believed that one or two signings would have been enough, to reinforce their team. With Arsenal and Chelsea spending big, they will now know that they must look for quality in these positions, for healthy competition for places in the starting line up.

Strong reports are indicating that Arsenal ace Robin Van Persie is heading for the club, with terms agreed and just a transfer fee left to be settled between the sides. Apart from RVP, it is believed that the club are looking at Leighton Baines, to take the place of current left back Patrice Evra (Source: Daily Mail). The England international would slot right into the team, and the likelihood of the transfer happening is increasingly likely, with more and more reports seeing the transfer happening. His set piece ability and link up play with the midfield is likely to strengthen the team.
