With Liverpool looking to sign talent on the cheap this summer, after their misfortunes last season, I wouldn’t be surprised if fans sat up and took notice of Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama and his agent’s recent comments. Speaking to Sky Sports, his agent confirmed that the player would be willing to move on from Celtic Park should the right offer come in:

“He is like any other young talented footballer in that he wants to play at the highest level. He has made the club aware that if they receive an offer from one of the big leagues he would like them to consider it.”

“He is not unhappy at Celtic, far from it – he loves the club and everything has been great for him since he moved but should something come in he feels they should listen.”

Wanyama joined Celtic just last summer from Belgian league side Beerschot AC (great name) for a fee believed to be under £1m. His value has since multiplied and Sky Sports now claim that he’d cost in excess of £6m. Whilst Brendan Rodgers has tightened Liverpool’s purse strings, I’m sure the club could afford that. It’s claimed that the Reds are interested, but should they make a bid?

My feeling is that this is an area of the park where Liverpool could improve. Lucas Leiva seems to be the only dedicated defensive midfielder in the first-team, with the likes of Jay Spearing the only plausible alternative. Whilst Spearing may be a hometown hero, I have my doubts as to whether he can hold such a mantle. Wanyama, though not as good as Lucas, would represent a step-up on the current set-up.

With the competition suddenly drained out of Scottish Premier League, I’m not surprised that the player is looking for an escape route. Along with Arsenal target Ki Sung-yeung, he’s the cream of Celtic’s crop. He’s tenacious, physical and has a great engine. He’s got the energy to get from box-to-box and the power to leave his mark on an opponent (figuratively, of course).

He’s just 21-years-old, so there’s plenty of time for him to learn and grow. There’s a good chance that he could develop into a world-beater and who better is there for him to learn from than Lucas?

Liverpool need to find a cost-effective solution to their midfielder problem and Victor may be exactly who they need.

What’s your take? Would Victor Wanyama be a good addition at Anfield?

Like the other informed Celtic Fans have posted, We will not be selling Wanyama on the cheap. He was stunning against Milan, but he was reasonably shaky in other recent games (about the time of his supposed move was being publicised). Lenny has told him to cop on. We need him for the CL. Ki is a good fit for QPR and we will let him go for less than £10 million. Victor will not be sold for less than that

I think you have to remember you are looking at a different approach right now from Celtic, one that has been a few years in the making.

Players have been recruited far and wide through considered scouting and the average age of the team to hit the park any matchday is generally around 22 to 23.

These players are coming along nicely as participation in last seasons Europa league saw them only lose to eventual winners A.Madrid.

If Celtic make this seasons Champions League there will be no need to sell anyone as the additional exposure could see players value increase even more. Plus given the pittance that Scottish football receives from tv this will be like winning the lottery by comparison.

In such circumstances dont be surprised to see very little out movement with the exception of perhaps Ki given he is down the pecking order, however his talents are more suited to playing in Europe so that one might be a non starter also.

Finally regarding Liverpool – I genuinely am surprised at the amount of money they have been throwing at average GB players over the past couple of years – if they want to stay in mid table this is the way to go about it.

Calm down Calm down! Look Jelavic proves their is quality in the Scotish league. However it is a fair point to make that the overall quality in the league is below the par of the English Championship. Now clearly Liverpool do need a shed load of new players, so people saying we need this that and the other are kind of asuming well not buy any one even if we get this guy, which i doubt. Big G seems to make a articulate and informed argument, so i guess, if that is the case we will have to pay a little over the odds, which id doesnt look like Rodgers will do. So Celtic fans relax you can keep your player, LFC fans im sure we will have plenty of new additions coming in. PEACE! YNWA!

Big Vic would cost 8million , as for putting Celtic down with your comments , check out how Liverpool did the last time they met Celtic in Europe . Finally if you read what Vic said you would see he would not sign for Liverpool , he wants to be successful , signing for a club who will never be champions in their own country rules that out .

The last time LFC met celtic in europe was a long time ago and is no longer relevant, as for playing in a team that will never win their league, well that is to be decided and it will happen but not for a while yet, playing for LFC in the EPL is still better than playing for celtic whether it is in the spl or any other league and if you asked any player, unless they were a celtic die-hard they would choose LFC over you any day. As for buying this kid yes he’s good in a league that is equvalent at best to the championship and having a good engine and being able to tackle isn’t what modern football is about as dalglish found to his detriment and subsequent sacking,if this kid can play as well as he runs then he would be a good asset to our squad but not until we offload a few midfielders first. I lOve it when they decry our ‘poor’ league….
Wasn’t long ago when we knocked Liverpool and Blackburn out of Europe …
Beaten the likes of juventus Milan Porto barcelona and manchester united in ‘competative’ champions league games at Celtic park!
We have probably one of the best home records in European football…

Not bad for a diddy league

I’ll bet you wanyama will go to a club currently bigger than Liverpool.

Your team is no better than spurs and have no chance in winning the league against superior teams such as Manchester united Manchester city or Chelsea .
Your the equivalent to a Dundee united or Motherwell in the premiership as they are in ours .

Learn from Lucas??? Are we serious? I’m a season ticket holder at Parkhead & tbh I don’t think Wanyama is as great as others say. He has potential & will blossom no doubt but Lucas comparisons are a nonsense. I know guidedogs with better positional sense than that mug! He’s rotten!

    • THE VOICE says:

It seems from your comments that it is your guidedog you are talking about, lucas has blossomed into 1 of the top three d/m’s in the league and if you think wanyama is better then he’ll get his move and prove you right then, oh i forgot you wont be able to read this being blind though eh! hence your inability to judge a player and position yourself to not look like a mug.

Lukaku has gone to WBA on loan for the season, think you just like naming players for the sake of naming them whilst being on another planet

  • Dan says:

Wanyama would be a great signing IMO, I think we should sell Adam and Spearing and are central midfield will look much stronger after the signing of Joe Allen aswell. Liverpool’s first concern should be a winger though as Bellamy,Kuyt and Maxi have all left and not been replaced, i’m am hoping we sign Gaston Ramirez and maybe Theo Walcott or Scott Sinclair. Dempsey is a good player but I don’t think he offers Liverpool anything they don’t already have and with Fulham refusing to budge on their £10m valuation I think the club should walk away from this deal. Hopeful transfers by the end of the window OUT-Aurelio,Kuyt,Maxi,Aquilani,Bellamy,Adam,Spearing IN-Borini,Allen,Ramirez,Wanyama,Walcott that along with swapping Daglish for Rodgers would be an excellent summer’s work for the club IMO

  • THE VOICE says:

BLAH BLAH BLAH stop speculating and wait till midnight august 31st and we will all know who we have or haven’t signed. the kid is good but whatever his value when the big clubs come sniffing you can safely add a couple of million to it, if liverpool want him then they will pay what celtic want for him and no amount of whining/shouting/slagging lfc off from the celtic fans will stop it because it is buisness. Get off your high horses and live with it, have celtic NEVER bought a player from another club when the fans wanted him to stay or said he was worth more, NO I DIDN’T THINK SO. YNWA JFT96
