Are these two exciting transfer targets enough to put Arsenal back in contention?

So after plenty of build-up (most of it positive – Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, though, some of it negative – I’m looking at your Robin Van Persie) Arsenal’s season stuttered into life with a 0-0 draw against an unambitious Sunderland side.

With all their new names on show, I’m sure Arsenal fans were expecting a rousing performance – the kind of performance that would put the RVP nonsense to bed. But, that’s not what they got. Whilst the Gunners huffed and puffed, they were unable to bypass Sunderland’s resolute defense. When Arsenal’s more creative players (Gervinho, Cazorla) did find a striker, they spurned their chances. The disappointment was palpable.

Whilst it’s hardly the end of the world, I’m sure Arsenal fans were expecting their side to prove that they could compete with the big boys this season. On this evidence, they’ll be chasing fourth place yet again this year.

As such, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Arsene Wenger reach back into the transfer market to try and breathe life into this side. It’s pleasing to see The Mirror claim that Arsenal are looking to bring in Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin on a season long loan and Sky Sports claim that Arsenal are in ‘pole position’ to sign Argentina international Lucas Biglia. Sky Sports even claim that ‘Arsenal’s interest in Nuri Sahin would be unaffected by their move for Biglia’.

So it’s not unreasonable for Arsenal fans to expect two new signings before the shop window slams shut. But is Arsene Wenger signing the right kind of players and will they be enough to add spark to this Arsenal side.

Given a certain Alex Song shaped void in this Arsenal squad, I’m sure that most fans were expecting Wenger to go after a defensive midfielder. It makes sense then, that he’s looking at Biglia. The 25-year-old Argentine is well thought of in his home country and has a reputation for being able to tackle and pass (just like Song). He’d be a smart addition and could provide a little more strength in depth.

But it’s most important that the Gunners bring in somebody capable of adding creative flair. Someone who can move the ball around quickly, release the likes of Giroud and Podolski and watch the assists roll in. I think Sahin could be that man. He’s a tenacious talent who loves to snap into challenges, compete and get play moving forward. He has the ability to carve open defenses and that’s what the Gunners need at the moment.

So, whilst I’m not sure these signings would make Arsenal title contenders, they may help secure a top four finish and have the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea looking over their backs. One thing’s for sure: Arsenal’s work in the transfer market isn’t over yet.

What’s your take? Would these signings make the Gunners title challengers?

Arsenal aren’t going to sign biglia and I hope they don’t. M’Vila is a better prospect who can still develop into an web better player. Biglia wouldn’t play many games at arsenal.
