Are Chelsea genuine title contenders once again?

In all honesty this seems like a stupid question. Chelsea are the Champions League winners and have spent in excess of £50 million already this Summer. Surely that makes them title favourites? However, their league form was atrocious last term and it took large amounts of good fortune for them to claim the Champions League. Will this season see the Blues claim back their league crown?

Roman Abramovich has acted fast this Summer (let’s not pretend Roberto Di Matteo had any say) to sign Marko Marin, Eden Hazard and Oscar. These are all good young players that will without question improve the overall standard of the Chelsea squad. It is a squad however that has a few issues which they will need to resolve if they are to challenge for the title.

One of those problems is perhaps the fact that all those signings play in a similar position. Chelsea like to line up with either a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 formation. They now have Mata, Malouda, Hazard, Oscar, Marin, Sturridge and possibly Yossi Benayoun all fighting for those two or three spots in support of the main striker. Competition for places is good but this could certainly cause friction among those massive egos if they are not receiving enough game time.

Another issue for new permanent manager Roberto Di Matteo is the fact that Fernando Torres is their only main striker on the playing staff. Now given his form since his move to Stamford Bridge, it could be argued that having Fernando Torres as your only striker is like having no strikers at all. There were definite signs of improvement in his form at Euro 2012 however, but even if he has a good season, one striker is not enough to cope with all competitions. They have let Lukaku go on loan to West Brom and Daniel Sturridge is the other possible option in that position. Chelsea though haven’t used him much in that position and so maybe they will play new boy Eden Hazard there. Whatever combination Di Matteo opts for they will certainly miss Didier Drogba and I would be surprised if Chelsea don’t move for another striker before September.

Mr writer u’re contradicting your self by saying torres is d only striker and also talking of sturridge as an option. Hazard is not a striker and cannot play in that position. Chelsea needs another striker and they’re in d market for that. About malouda and benayoun, d club has made its declearation that they’ll leave before the transfer window closes.
