Would Liverpool find him worthy of his £16m price-tag?

Uruguay’s rise to prominence in world football during recent times comes as no surprise following the growing distinction of players such as Edinson Cavani, Christian Rodriguez and of course Liverpool’s own talisman, Luis Suarez. But who is the next star to billow out of South America?

It seems Serie A side, Bologna, are resigned to losing their leading light to one of Europe’s top clubs and its Merseyside that could prove to be the final destination for Gaston Ramirez. Liverpool reported to have tabled an offer of around £15 million (Source: The Metro and Goal.com confirm that Bologna value him at this price). However, just what is Rodgers spending his money on?

The 21-year-old fired 8 goals in 32 impressive performances for Bologna in a successful season where they finished 9th. Costing as little as €2.5 million when he joined the Italian side in 2010, he has since kicked on and established himself as a regular starter and one of Europe’s hottest prospects, catching the eye of major clubs, such as Juventus and Manchester City. Preferring to attempt to run the show in a role behind the main striker, Ramirez meanders across the pitch with such elegance that he contradicts his age. Outstanding intelligence in possession and an imposing figure at just over 6 foot, a future in a demanding league such as the English one, could provide evidence of his exceptional playmaking ability.

New Anfield boss, Brendan Rodgers likes to present his possession beliefs on the pitch in a fluid and free flowing 4-3-3 system, incorporating tiki-taka football as well as solidity in defence. The question comes when faced with where to place Ramirez in a starting XI. The attacking midfield role could excite the Uruguayan; however, Liverpool would have enough offensive intent with the inclusion of Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard and Alberto Aquilani. Ramirez has also been deployed on the wing, despite drifting inside to present more interchanging of the football. This confusion over a most effective position could prove a stumbling block as questions arise over his capability of holding down a regular spot. In some people’s eyes, his excellent versatility overcomes his lack of defensive work yet; Rodgers has stressed the importance of hard work and determination as the key to success.

The recent track record of flourishing transfers from Serie A to the Barclays Premier League is bleak, nonetheless, successes in the Premier League from Italy are of those who reinforced their undoubted talent in Italy’s top division before making the jump across to England and at a meagre 21, Ramirez has plenty of time to prove the need to fork out nearly £20 million for his services. While he would not come cheap, he will add some lacking creativity and goals that were lacking in the Reds midfield last term. Possessing all the tools to make him a hit in Merseyside, it is now down to Brendan Rodgers to call fire as Liverpool aim for one of Europe’s hottest prospects.

Definitely ! He is young so even if his first season is like Downing’s he could still turn things around.
Only thing Downing can do to became worthy of his transfer fee would have to be some kind of a miracle .

If LFC want to buy Ramirez i think we should be sensible in the way we go about paying 15m. Firstly i would offer around 8-10m for him leading up to possibly 15m maybe a little more cos he comes to LFC as a 21yr kid, different language, culture, foreign style of football and very physical too. So like i said about the payment 8-10m now, if he has good first season another 2-3m and then we should pay the rest if he becomes a regular starter, and an important first team player for the team in general. If gaston Ramirez does sign for LFC lets hope we dont get caught out paying over the odds again ie 15-18m for a player that has great ability ie (Ryan Babel) had been labled one of the greatest things to come fome holland that was until LFC paid 11m for a player who could’nt trap the ball, control poor, lacked the visual and the mental brain to ever be a good football hence why he is not with our great instiute no more.So i would like to see LFC be more pushy about the way they pay for players especially the ones’s that are not world renouned players that way we all can decide if we are getting players that are overpriced drivel for big fees, or if we go out and spend 30-40million on a couple of players us LFC fans know are world class and know what we are buying. You know what maybe you guys commenting will disagree with this post…?
