Would Arsenal fans be able to forgive and forget were RVP to sign a new contract?

Forgive and forget. Arsenal fans, is this something you’re capable of? By now we’ve all read over and analysed (and indeed, over analysed) Robin Van Persie’s official statement regarding his future at the club he captains. We’ve all spit bile and bemoaned the fact that our beloved captain could be so callous and so carelessly burn his bridges with the club.

How could somebody we’ve grown so attached to tell us that “it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward.” What does that even mean? It’s a very vague approach for somebody eager to paint himself as a thoughtful individual.

Beyond this, one key question arises: is Ivan Gazidis on holiday or not.

I think we had all come to turns with the fact that there was a good chance Robin Van Persie wouldn’t play for Arsenal again. So it’s difficult to know how to react to Sky Sports News’ claims that RVP’s contract situation is far from certain. That there’s still a chance, that he could pen an extension (counter to his previous claims).

In his statement RVP noted that he was yet to discuss contract terms with Arsenal. Sky Sports sources are now claiming that he’s willing to do exactly that.

This would surely be a turnaround of bizarre proportions. RVP’s statement seriously affected his relationship with the fans. He made it clear that he had no interest in staying the course with the club that oversaw his development over 8 years.

Perhaps he’s shocked by the way fans have reacted and is looking to make amends in the only way possible: signing a new contract. But would this get the fans back on side? I’m sure a few would be glad to have him back on side. Most would appreciate that he’s a top player and adds so much to the team. But will there ever be that same love? I’m not so sure.

What if Samir Nasri were to apologise and make a shock return to the Emirates? Would Gunners forgive him? I highly doubt it. RVP is a better player, but his situation is much the same.

Part of me still hopes that he agrees new terms. It would stop people from labelling Arsenal a ‘feeder club’. It would be a marker of the club’s ambition. Whether I’ll ever appreciate him in the same way, however, stay or go, is a completely different matter.

The only forgetting will be made from RVP, either this summer for a few million or next one for FREE!

Based on his statement, which for me says “I don’t agree with the club management on some tings and for this reason I will not sign a new contract” if he were to sign – it means that he would have found agreement – and signed a new contract.

What would there be to forgive?

If he had said “I want to sign for Manchester City” or some other club – there might be cause to forgive something – but why should we forgive based on media speculation.

And give us a break – Nasri has badmouthed the club and the supporters – I’m not sure Van Persie has done that so to compare the two… give us a break.

If he signs – great – if not – and we sell – let’s just hope we get good money and reinvest.

    get him away…
never want to see him again in an Arsenal jersey..

Just make him fulfill his contract and let him go next year.

    Nothing to forgive.

Footballers have the right to move jobs for other pastures just like anyone else(long-time season ticket holder).

  • ali says:

everything will be fine if he leaves but we need to replace him with jovetic

  • Sunny says:

Yes. I would love to have him in Arsenal

I am absolutely disgusted by the Arsenal fans reaction to RVP – its not like hes off to join Chelsea or Tottenham. 8 years loyal service and a season (last season) where he pretty much carried the team single-handedly – if it wasnt for his goals Arseanal would have finshed 8th or 9th!

Arsenal fans seem to be the slowest to realise that players are motivated by rewards – finacial and trophies – not by loyalty. Its almost like badge kissing is a prerequisite to becoming arsenal player….

i think before anybody should forgive him , he must totally and fully retract that stupid letter he so says wrote, when we all know it was is agent/advisor, bad move RVP should have listened to your wife/parents they always know best. Next but formost he would have to publically apologise to Arsene W, has he as stood buy him for the last long 8 years, nothing less, if not sell him ASAP for max profit but please use this money to buy M’Vila or similar.

The purchase of Podolski and Giroud leads you into thinking that Van Persie is as good as gone.Nice the way the statement was delayed until after the season ticket deadline. Was that a cook up beteween the club and Van Persie ?.If he is going get rid of him asap so we can all move on .The effects of last years debacle with Nasri and Fabregas sent us into freefall at the start of the season

Be the first ones to cast stones on a player who was the ONLY player to have rescued the club’s pride, profitability and bragging rights in a single season. Just imagine should he did not DELIVER,you all dumb idiots would be the laughing stock of the league for a very LONG,LONG TIME,and got pissed on by every Spuds fans you encounter every time . Could any of you loud mouth live with THAT??? Really, still in flipping lynching posse mood, how dumb!! It is very sad to lose RVP should it happen, but live and let live. For all those trophy-less years most fans, except some pride-less ones, were restless and helpless to engage the club to do any thing,RVP might have RISKED everything to persuade the club to a change of tactics. And if he is a fan,it is the most noble thing to do! He may have handled it bluntly, but just like a frustrated fan. So back off and look in the mirror. He has never said a bad thing about the club yet a lot of dumb and self righteous fans are happy to shoot their best player, captain and scorer readily. Incredibly stupid.
