Throughout the years, the Premier League has been graced with no shortage of technically gifted midfielders; the likes of Zola & Ronaldo epitomized the modern day playmaker.

On the contrary to many views, there’s a fine line between your traditional attacking midfielder and, to use its technical term, the ‘creative’ midfielder. An attacking midfielder, makes box-to-box runs, and supports the attack from the edge of the area. Whereas the coveted playmaker role, exploits the weakness in between midfield and defense, finding ominous space and creating chances with a whole repertoire of probing passes.

It’s suffice to say, the creative midfielder, has become a pivotal role in football, which has subsequently led to many looking to acquire players established in that sought after position. Inevitably many clubs fall short of the extortionate prices oversea clubs try to manipulate into paying, however, clubs who have the resources can, to use the analogy, ‘dip into the talent pool’.

In 2009, Tottenham Hotspur inadvertently succeeded in their attempt to sign a promising Croatian playmaker, by the name of Luka Modric. Following a successful stint at his home club, Dinamo Zagreb, he made the move to North London looking to display the versatile game that made had him a monumental success in Croatia.

English football had already been shown a glimpse of the Croatian’s undeniable talent when Croatia orchestrated a 3-2 victory at Wembley, ultimately costing England a place at the European Championships in 2008. On that day, Modric, dictated the pace of the game at will, and evidently enhanced his reputation.

In that same year, Modric eventually started his Spurs career, under Juande Ramos. After coming under relentless criticism from the Media, who had brandished the 26-year-old a lightweight. With his range of passing and innovation nullified due to the position he was allocated, performances came at a premium for the midfielder.

Following the sacking of Ramos, it was under newly appointed manager, Harry Redknapp that Luka Modric could finally shine. Being played in a more advanced role, Modric displayed the composure and innovation associated with the midfielder, before his move to England.

Components of the midfielder’s game became even more evident during Spurs’ remarkable run in the Champions League; Redknapp then began to favor Modric’s versatility, allowing the midfielder to adopt a deeper role, which was paying dividends for the West London club. Week in, week out, Modric was providing an outstanding amount of consistency in his play, the playmaker’s vision and technique were more than vindicating Tottenham’s purchase.

Like many situations’ in today’s society, the economy now dictates football, and predictably, Luka Modric’s exemplary talent has not gone unnoticed amongst Europe. Though Tottenham demand no less than 40 million for the Croatian, enthusiasts have not been few or far between,  with Madrid seemingly the most likely to capture the midfielder’s services, the permutations of a move abroad for the Croatian, will undoubtedly be a catastrophic loss for the Premier League.

At a time where English football was deprived of seldom playmaker’s, Luka Modric, took the Premier League by storm and continued to win admirers with his complex game. Not many players can adapt as quickly to the fast pace of the EPL, but not only succeeding in that element, but continuously providing spectators with extraordinary moments of brilliance and sublime skill. One can only wish he continues to deliver in England and not abroad.
